Vincent Jackson to remain a Charge

By John Clayton and Bill Williamson

ESPN.com

The San Diego Chargers have rejected several trade offers for wide receiver Vincent Jackson, letting the Wednesday deadline to trade him pass without making a deal, according to multiple sources.

The NFL and the NFL Players' Association had agreed to a 4 p.m. ET deadline for San Diego to trade Jackson, which would have allowed him to be active by the fifth week of the regular season; Jackson is under a three-game suspension for past DUI offenses. When he did not sign his restricted free agent tender, the Chargers placed Jackson on an exempt list, which prohibited him from playing for three more weeks.

By letting Wednesday's deadline pass, the Chargers will keep Jackson on the exempt list for the first six weeks of the season. San Diego still can trade him by the Oct. 19 trade deadline.

"We had multiple offers and the Chargers squashed them all," Jonathan Feinsod, one of Jackson's agents, said.

The Minnesota Vikings were willing to give up a second-round draft choice and an additional conditional pick to the Chargers, a source said. Another source said Jackson had even worked out a financial package with the Vikings.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said he would only trade Jackson if he received the right value, and he would make a trade only with a team of his choosing.

Feinsod was critical of Smith, saying "Archie Manning had it right," a reference to Manning's reluctance to have Eli Manning play for San Diego after being drafted by the team in 2004. "They call [smith] the Lord of No Rings for a reason."

damn I wonder the Chargers are asking for? 3 1st rounders?! lmaoo

That's pretty reasonable for a guy they'd only have for 10 games this year, especially when you factor in the fact that it looks like the Vikings suck.

The Chargers are a bunch of toddlers.

"This toy sucks! I want a better one! Why does that guy have a better one? Who would want this crap?"

"Okay, I'll take it then, here you can have my one."

"No mine is the best, it's worth 5 of yours. If you want mine you have to give me 5 of yours!"

These guys are such assholes. They're low balling V-Jack and don't want to give him market rate, but then they turn around and demand a king's ransom because they feel that is what he is worth. Here's an idea, give him a fair tender.

If I am the player's union I save every bit of this, stick it into a power point, and present it at negotiations, and play it to the media too. "Look at the greedy ****s we are dealing with! They somehow can have a player under contract without having him under contract!"

That is kind of funny when you think about it :)

:D very funny

the Chargers were considered huge winners for getting Shawne Merriman and Phillip Rivers in exchange for Eli & Osi Uminyora

turns out they were wrong...granted the Chargers did get two great players out of that trade....just not a SB

The stuff normal people only say on a message board Feinsod and Schwartz say in public. These guys are insane and in the long run they aren't helping their clients. They are intentionally pissing off a guy(a. j. smith) who is known as a ruthless hard a$$. Lets see if this really helps their client.

It's idiotic.

Unless Revis and Jackson are their only clients, they really shouldn't run around alienating General Managers.

I am so glad that the Chargers did not cave in.

Feinsod and his gang of extortionists should be taught a lesson by someone!

Better the Chargers than us.

From the point of the team, it's just stupid. If they were offered a #2 in 2011 plus another pick from the Vikes, they should've jumped on it. Or, they should take the contract parameters agreed to by these other teams, and sign Jackson to the same numbers themselves. The absolute best they will do if Jackson leaves via free agency next year will be an end of the 3rd round comp pick in 2012. And Jackson just might be vindictive enough to sign a deal with a low first year take just to screw with that comp pick.

I wouldn't want my team to teach an agent a lesson by cutting off it's nose to spite it's face. This is just bad business.

I think so far its only Feinsod and Schwarz saying this was offered for Jackson.

AJ Smith is an awesome GM...top 5 I'd say.

If the recent reports about Jackson are true, he's hurting his team for no good reason. Chargers are worse this year than they were last year, and last year they weren't good enough.

Hardly the work of a top five executive.

Not with Turner & the Chargers.

Well he's 28...so Turner isn't even in the way really...He could have a new coach as soon as next year and he's still pre-prime...the Chargers...iunno people are sleeping on them. It's like the reverse Cardinals effect...they've been so good that they "should have" won a SB by now but they didn't...if you look at them they're built alot like that '07 Giants team was on D...tons and tons of pass rushers...though I guess it looks like they're not getting anything from Merriman (which would be a huge diff maker)....whatever they're not the Jets anyway...

Keeping Jackson >>> Trading Jackson

AJ Smith is outstanding at gathering talent. His ego has cost them a title or two however.

No Peyton Manning and Tom Brady alive and in their prime have cost him a ring or two...

I'll put it this way...if a GM is able to consistently field one of the more talented teams in the sport...AND that team has a top tier young franchise QB...what's the more likely outcome...a future SB or no future SB?

Keeping Jackson >>> Trading Jackson

Trading Jackson for value >>> Letting Jackson rot

If they want to take the number the Vikes offered him and get him signed long term, then smart move. Right now it looks like they're going to lose him next year and get a comp pick (of far less value) in return in 2012. Bad business.

The comp pick they can get would be as high as a 2nd or 3rd IIRC...not exactly a huge loss from the 2nd the Vikings are offering...especially since the Vikings would be a very good team with Jackson...also, they get to keep their best WR/non-QB offensive weapon.

Should we have traded Revis?

Highest comp pick will be the end of the third round in 2012. Far cry from a mid second round pick + from the Vikes in 2011. In trade terms, a pick is devalued a round every year out it's traded. So a 2012 3rd rounder is worth a 2011 4th rounder. Very big difference there.

Keeping their best receiver is useless if he's not on the field.

And yes, if the Jets and Revis were unable to come to terms on a contract, then the Jets should've traded him for everything they could get. Getting him signed was the much preferred option, but I don't see your top 5 exec exactly getting that done in san Diego. He now has contract parameters in his hands that Jackson agreed to, why not pull the trigger now on the same deal?

The Chargers draft extremely well and losing a probable low 2nd round pick to keep their best WR probably isn't going to cost anyone any sleep. In trade terms the 2011 2nd seems better...perhaps they're looking at it from a different vantage point then...like they get to keep their best WR and either force him to play, extend him, or have him sit out his contract year (him f*cking himself). Either way they'll come away with either Jackson or a pick...

As it stands now, Jackson is f*cking himself.

Keeping their best WR is a zero gain if he sits the year, and it's a net loss if they miss a sure chance on a high 2nd-rounder for the sake of principle. I don't see how Smith is any different from the "let him rot" mongoloids around here.

Turner's supposedly on his last leg with Harbaugh (Stanford) being at the top of the wishlist. Not even sure if that works for either guy, Smith wants another puppet and Harbaugh's an alpha dog.

The thing is Harbaugh is a really, really, really good coach from a long line of good football coaches. IIRC he's more hyped than his brother, who was a very respect young hire for the Ravens, no?

I think that'd be a very shrewd hire by Smith if it were to happen. Also it'd go to show that those newspapers aren't always right in their psychoanalysis...

Now you've got me actually hoping SD makes the hire...I'd love to see it for many reasons.

The problem is the assumption that this 2nd round would be mid or high. It'd be low...the Vikings are a pretty good team.

How likely do you think it is that Jackson actually plays 0 games this year?
