dbatesman
The problem is the assumption that this 2nd round would be mid or high. It'd be low...the Vikings are a pretty good team. How likely do you think it is that Jackson actually plays 0 games this year? Whether it is or not, two 2nd-round picks > one 2nd-round pick, especially considering Smith's draft record weighed against whatever Jackson gives you for 10 games. Smith's draft record is probably just another reason they didn't care about the Vikings second. Also, getting their best WR for 10 games would be worth alot if they could get a SB win or appearance out of it. This is a team that is a perennial Super Bowl candidate...therefore it's in their best interest to keep their best players on hand. There's no real chance of Jackson sitting out the season...if he is then he's just screwing himself.

SMC
If the recent reports about Jackson are true, he's hurting his team for no good reason. Chargers are worse this year than they were last year, and last year they weren't good enough. Hardly the work of a top five executive. AJ Smith's "good rep" is a myth. He could have traded Michael Turner for a 2nd rounder, but he insisted on a 1st rounder and then lost Turner for nothing the following year. That doesn't help the team. Now the same thing with Jackson. I think Schwartz & Feinsod are ridiculous, but Smith is hurting the Chargers now with his stance. Jackson is walking next yr so they might as well get something good for him. If the Vikes' offer is accurate, he's an idiot for not doing it. JetsFanInDenver
Better the Chargers than us. From the point of the team, it's just stupid. If they were offered a #2 in 2011 plus another pick from the Vikes, they should've jumped on it. Or, they should take the contract parameters agreed to by these other teams, and sign Jackson to the same numbers themselves. The absolute best they will do if Jackson leaves via free agency next year will be an end of the 3rd round comp pick in 2012. And Jackson just might be vindictive enough to sign a deal with a low first year take just to screw with that comp pick. I wouldn't want my team to teach an agent a lesson by cutting off it's nose to spite it's face. This is just bad business. I think so far its only Feinsod and Schwarz saying this was offered for Jackson. That's the point i was going to make. We know only one side of the story. But given the track record of these agents have i won't be surprised if the deal they wanted had huge guarantees or was front loaded so that Vincent Jackson could hold out again. SenorGato
AJ Smith's "good rep" is a myth. No, it was earned through shrewd moves that turned a floundering franchise into a perennial contender. He did mess up that Turner situation, but I could go and point out bad moves by any good GM. It doesn't necessarily mean they suck. The move to keep Jackson may seem like it's hurting the Chargers...more likely it's hurting Jackson and his team of agents alot more. SenorGato
M.A.D. seems like a far less astute managing strategy than maximizing return. You're assuming the Chargers offense will fall apart without Jackson. That's not true. They have one of the deepest WR corps in the league, and probably the best under-30 QB in the league. Jackson's going to be the long term loser in this...
Aten
No, it was earned through shrewd moves that turned a floundering franchise into a perennial contender. And the perception that his rep was a myth in the first place was earned by taking that potential contender and turning it into a perennial also-ran by changing gears from franchise-building to win now at least two years too soon. Jetsfan80
Is SenorGato a Jets fan or a Chargers fan? I seem to remember the Jets smoking theat uber-talented team last season in their own building, just like it always happens to San Diego in the playoffs. SenorGato
So what exactly do they gain by keeping Jackson out of spite rather than trading him at peak value? Well they've got until Oct. 19th to trade him...and he wouldn't be able to play until Week 6 anyway...and according to this: http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/09/22/vikings-still-scrambling-after-vincent-jackson-trade-falls-throu/ the Chargers are asking too much... But the Chargers' reported asking price of second- and third-round 2011 draft choices apparently was too high. So considering all that...plus that he's a really good player for the Chargers when he's actually playing...perhaps the Chargers are just waiting it out and plan to have him on the field this season...they have no dire need for him right now but he'd certainly make that passing game even more dangerous come mid and late season...if he doesn't want to show up or they can't come to an agreement then trade him in mid-October like any other team would do. I see no need for SD to feel rushed is alls I'm saying. There's many ways this can play out, and since they have time they might as well use it. Is SenorGato a Jets fan or a Chargers fan? I seem to remember the Jets smoking theat uber-talented team last season in their own building, just like it always happens to San Diego in the playoffs. We beat them by 5 points on a last minute TD...that's not smoking anything. I have a healthy respect for other tough teams, yues.
