Jets among clubs looking at Trent Edwards

September, 27, 2010 By Tim Graham

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Trent Edwards probably won't hit the free-agent market Tuesday.

The Buffalo Bills were unable to trade Edwards, but Mortensen reports at least five teams expect to place a claim on Edwards before the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

The teams Mortensen names are the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks.

An NFL source tells me the Jets are evaluating Edwards as a possibility but haven't made an official decision. They probably wouldn't be awarded Edwards anyway because other teams would have priority in the waiver process.

The Jets already have two experienced backup quarterbacks: Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens, who took a paycut to stay on the roster. But the Jets kept four quarterbacks last year, trading for former New England Patriots draft pick Kevin O'Connell and keeping him all season.

The Jets play the Bills on Sunday in Ralph Wilson Stadium. With divisional victories at a premium, the Jets would love to mine Edwards for inside information on Chan Gailey's offense.

Another team to keep in mind: New England. The Patriots have only one backup quarterback, Brian Hoyer, and have a roster spot open after waiving tackle Steve Maneri on Monday.

He is actually an upgrade for and could start for the Jags, Seahawks and especially the Panthers. Honestly Cassel sucks too and should be giving half his paycheck to Moss and BB, but I guess Trent Edwards is about as bad as him so it evens out. Maybe if Edwards starts on the Panthers they can actually play offense. Pro Bowl WR, 2 Pro Bowl level RBs, a fantastic O-line and a terrible QB absolutely blows that apart. I can't believe how bad Moore is, even Edwards is better.

I had wondered if the Jets would be interested when I heard about this earlier, but kind of dismissed it, figuring that he really was no upgrade over Clemens and the obvious advantage is that Clemens knows the playbook as well as anyone on the team, so why make the switch? The only possibility I could see is if they view Edwards as a viable option as a long term backup to Sanchez, which would allow them to move on from at least 2 of Brunell, Clemens and O'Connell next year. I guess you could say at least three QBs if you still consider Ainge a part of the future.

3 things.

We are the Jets. Mikey T ALWAYS kicks the tires.

We play them this week. Of course we're going to try to get him in here to pick his brain.

Signing Trent Edwards allows us to trade Kellen Clemens. Which I think we wanted to do in the pre-season, until it became apparent that Brunell would last 1 quarter if Sanchez got hurt.

Two teams put waiver claim on Trent Edwards

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 28, 2010 5:39 PM ETTrent Edwards may have attracted more interest as a free agent, but only two teams were willing to put a waiver claim on him and accept his previous contract with Buffalo.

We told you the Jaguars were awarded Edwards earlier. The Jets were the other team to attempt to claim Edwards.

Buffalo's next two opponents: The Jets and Jaguars, of course.

Interesting, if nothing else. Wonder if it was an info gathering attempt, or if they would've wanted to hold onto him as a possible long term backup solution.
