Brett Ratliff Cut FRom Jaguars Practice Squad

The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed safety Gerald Alexander (pictured) and waived veteran tight end Ernest Wilford and fourth-year defensive back Michael Coe. Quarterback Brett Ratliff was waived from the practice squad.

Alexander, 6-2, 209, is in his second stint with the Jaguars after playing in 15 games with 10 starts for the club in 2009. He was acquired via trade from Detroit on June 29, 2009. The former Boise State standout spent the 2010 preseason with the Jaguars before he was waived on final cuts.

Alexander has played in 36 games, starting 27, and totaled 153 tackles, four interceptions, two sacks, five forced fumbles and 10 tackles for loss. Wilford and Coe played in the last two games for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars roster currently stands at 52 players.

Good catch, Idahojetsfan. Lots of Jets fans considered Ratliff the real Jet QB of the future not so long ago, and this is definitely an item of interest.

I cant understand what happened with this kid. A 6-5 QB with a strong arm who displayed very good pocket presence under pressure never gets a shot to play even on teams with horrible QB situations like the Browns and the Jaguars ? Mangini being an Idiot is one reason, but the kid at least deserved one chance since Manginis situation the last few years was a joke in Cleveland and he had to have him as part of the Edwards trade.

Something else must be going on because all this kid did was play well when he got the chance in Preseason. I used Tony Romo as an example in the past when the Cowboys bounced him around from the active roster to practice squad then deactivated him for games and would never give him a chance for 4 years ( it was actully a big joke on Dallas talk radio) then he comes in a lights it up throwing 30 TD's makes you wonder about NFL talent evaluation. Tom Brady who seems to have every quality you want in a QB and played at a big school gets drafted in the 7th round and if not for a freak Injury to Bledsoe who knows if we would have ever seen him play. Makes you wonder how many players slip through the cracks.

What has Clemens Proved at any point in his career here ? Bad pocket presence, Cant handle snaps, Bad decisions throwing into coverage or just afraid to throw the football ?

You were by far his biggest fan. Sometimes players just suck even though they lit up a bunch grocery baggers in the perseason. And this is a true indictment of his sucktitude because Garrard is flailing and McCown is hurt. They are in dire need of a QB.

The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed veteran linebacker Eric Alexander and added second-year quarterback Keith Null to the practice squad.

Alexander, 6-2, 240, has spent the past six seasons with the New England Patriots where he played in 45 games. Alexander has 40 career special teams tackles including 14 in two different seasons. He has played in six postseason games and made his only career start at linebacker in the AFC Championship game against Indianapolis on Jan. 21, 2007 and led the team with 10 tackles including one sack.

A native of Tyler, Texas, Alexander played in 14 games for the Patriots in 2009 and ranked third on the team with 14 special teams tackles. He spent the 2010 preseason with the club before he was waived on final cuts. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the Patriots in 2004 and spent the majority of his rookie season on the club’s practice squad.

Alexander, who will wear number 53, was a four-year letterman at Louisiana State where he began his career as a safety before moving to linebacker as a sophomore. He lettered in four sports – football, basketball, baseball and track – at Stephen F. Austin High School in Port Arthur, Texas.

Null, 6-4, 220, was a sixth-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2009 and played in five games for the Rams as a rookie including four starts. He completed 61.3 percent of his passes (73 of 119) for 566 yards with three touchdowns and nine interceptions. He spent the 2010 preseason with the Rams before he was waived during final cuts. I sometimes wonder how anybody can decide if a QB is good or bad if the guy never gets to play in the regular season.

He looked pretty good in the preseason for the Jets one year, that's about all we know. Normally that is a prelude to getting some time in the regular season due to injury or mop-up duty, but it never happened. Fact is, I don't believe the guy was ever listed ahead of Kellen Clemens officially.

Until then Ratliff either has to hope for a break or work his way into an organization for a couple of years and convince the coaching staff he's the heir apparent to the starter. He's already gone through us, the Browns and the Jaguars-he may be running out of coaches or front-office personnel who think he's worth a look-see.

JiF I saw some qualities in the Kid and thats about it. I never said he would be great but i was impressed with his presence in the pocket his arm and his size. All Im asking is on a team like the Cleveland Browns who can barely win football games why at some point was this kid not given at least one chance to play while Anderson and Quinn totally sucked ? Just a chance is all Im asking.

Kid was on a roll for awhile, (for an undrafted free agent), but now it looks like he can't catch a break.

Yes, but usually if a young QB has a good preseason, as Ratliff did, you generally hear from them later. Ratliff basically disappeared, with little chance to show what he can do. That is unusual.

It's not that a good preseason automatically entitles you to an NFL career. It's that coming off a good preseason, most teams make it their business to see what you can do, one way or the other. That didn't happen with Ratliff.

The Jacksonville Jaguars today were awarded quarterback Trent Edwards off waivers from the Buffalo Bills. Linebacker Alvin Bowen was waived to make room for Edwards on the roster.

Edwards, 6-4, 231, has started 32 of 34 games since being selected in the third round of the 2007 draft by the Bills. His career totals include 535 of 878 passing for 5,739 yards with 25 touchdowns and 27 interceptions for a 76.8 passer rating. He has six career games with a 100-plus passer rating. He opened the 2010 season as the Bills starter and was 29 of 52 passing for 241 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the first two games before he was waived on Sept. 27. In 2009, Edwards started seven of eight games and completed 110 of 183 passes (60.1 pct.) for 1,169 yards.

In 2008, Edwards ranked sixth in the NFL and fifth in the AFC with a 65.5 completion percentage and was third in the NFL with a 106.3 fourth quarter passer rating. He became the sixth second-year quarterback since 1984 to lead his team to a 4-0 start. He started nine games as a rookie in 2007, the most of any NFL rookie and was the first Bills rookie quarterback to record five wins since 1973. Edwards set a franchise rookie record with 120 consecutive passes without an interception and had four touchdown passes on Dec. 9 vs. Miami.

The 26-year old ranked seventh in Stanford history with 5,429 passing yards and 36 touchdowns in his college career. He attended Los Gatos High School in California. Edwards will wear number 5.

Its nice to know the Jets at least went after Edwards. I understand Brunell is our backup, but it would be nice to have a younger QB who has had some decent NFL success on the roster. Edwards > Clemens.
