LionelRichie
I am taking Mrs. Richie to Istanbul next month and am trying to find a good hotel to stay at. It looks like there are a few different areas in the city and was looking for advice on which is best. Any help in appreciated.

I can't say much about the hotels because I only spent a weekend there and that was 10 years ago. I will say though that there are some pretty amazing sites there. I'd definitely recommend a bosphorus cruise and a trip to rumeli fortress. I'm sure you'll do the mosques as most people do and the bazaar which is somewhat of a ripoff. Gold there was cheap by US standards but more than double what we used to pay just off base in Adana. You should definiltey get some great pics though with the skyline/scenery. If you're having a hard time picking a travel web site to find a hotel, I use tripadvisor.com for every trip I take. Thousands of customer reviews for every location you can imagine. I've never been disappointed in a hotel I stayed in that I picked from that site. I generally try to pick something out of their top ten rated places to stay. Have a great time. A buddy of mine went and stayed at some fancy a$$ place. I'll ask him. His girlfriend loved it.

LionelRichie
Thanks for the info so far. We are using tripadvisor as well as virtualtourist which is pretty good as well. It looks like there are 3 primary areas to stay in: the historic area, the financial district, and the area with nightlife/restaurants/bars. So far everything looks pretty expensive but we'd like to stay at a nice place since we booked the entire trip with miles.
CTM
questions: mm it depends on purpose.. more historical sightseeing or modern.. n what s the budget if on a budget, n wanna see more historic stuff.. stay in the Old City.. all the significant landmarks are walking distance n there are some decent places to stay.. if more into modern n luxury... I'd say find a hotel on Bosphorus great sea view, (sometimes right by the sea) if got a lot of money, then stay @ Ciragan Kempinski if staying by bosphorus, taxi will be necessary to go places.. well still not expensive anyway...much cheaper than NYC taxis..
