s dubb
Trevor Pryce says he came to Jets to play for Rex Ryan Published: Thursday, September 30, 2010, 5:05 PM Updated: Thursday, September 30, 2010, 5:25 PM Trevor Pryce went jogging with his wife yesterday, in order to clear his head after being released by the Ravens. When he returned, the defensive end had a call from his agent: "You're reporting to New York." "When Rex calls, you answer the call," said Pryce, who played three seasons for Ryan in Baltimore. "It was strange walking in here at first," he added. "Then I looked at the playbook, and all the plays are the same. It was like I stepped in a time capsule. I saw DT (Dennis Thurman), I saw Rex and I saw (Mike) Pettine. I saw Bart (Scott)." Pryce said a few other teams were interested, but he had an understanding with his agent that if the Jets called, he was going there. He confirmed that Baltimore intended to bring him back next Monday, which coach John Harbaugh communicated to him in a 30-minute talk, but the chance to play for Ryan interfered with those plans. "When this opportunity pops up," Pryce explained, "You go, 'Ah, I don’t think I'm going back.' " Pryce said he never gave his word to the Ravens that he would be back, because there was no guarantee they would bring him back. He said another choice would have been to sit out the rest of the season. Since he's a vested veteran, and was on the Ravens roster Week 1, they have to pay him his $2 million salary regardless. He said he respected Harbaugh sitting down with him and added that he has many friends on the team. But he described the Ravens' move as "a calculated risk," and added they probably didn't think another team would swoop in so quickly and so seriously. Pryce's loyalty to Ryan clearly runs deep. He said he doesn't look at it like "wanting" to play for Ryan, but that you "have to play for him." "He instills confidence in you that you don't have," he said. "I got released from Denver, that whole thing went down, and he just thought I was more than I knew I was. And by doing that, you don't want to let somebody like that down." Pryce said the pass rush packages he was supposed to play in, Baltimore never got the chance to call ("We couldn't stop water from running," he said. "We had some stuff to work out."). But he said he has a different expectation of the contributions he can make here, because he was brought in to be a pass rusher. He added that he doesn't care how much he plays, as long as he has the chance to make an impact when he is on the field. He said the similarity of the playbook -- near identical, as he described it -- will allow him to play this week. The Ravens, like the Jets, have high aspirations this season. But Pryce already expressed his loyalty and excitement for his new team. "If not for a penalty on Braylon Edwards, the Jets would have beaten Baltimore here on Monday night," he said. "That lets you know what I think." I'm lost for words. Rex is all types of awesome!

PatsFanTX
I'm lost for words. Rex is all types of awesome! Rex is a 11-8 HC in the NFL. You might want to wait a few years before you put him up there with Lombardi, Walsh, Shula and Belichick.

You might want to wait a few years before you put him up there with Lombardi, Walsh, Shula and Belichick. and nobody is-consider what we had with Parcells who quit, Belichick-who quit, Groh-who quit, Edwards-who is a fool and even HE quit, and Mangini-who was unqualified and we finally have a real head coach who in his 1st year won us 2 playoff games on the road with a rookie QB-give us a break Mike...can you blame us for being excited? Not at all Jimmy, and you guys have every right to be excited. All I'm saying is Rex's body of work as a NFL HC is pretty small as of right now. Do you remember how excited you guys were after the Mangenious took the Jets to the playoffs in his first year?
Bruce Banner
I don't buy this stuff about Pryce loving Rex. He came to the Jets cuz he thinks the stats he can put up here will help him in salary negotiations more than the stats he would put up staying in Baltimore. This was 100% a money decision. If any of you jokers played a part in adding MILLIONS to my bank account I would sing your praises too. Not like the stuff I say now.
Scott Dierking
Rex is a 11-8 HC in the NFL. You might want to wait a few years before you put him up there with Lombardi, Walsh, Shula and Belichick. What was Belichick's record after his first 19 games? I don't think any one is placing Rex on that level, more so saying that it is refreshing to see a coach with the Jets where the needle is pointing up, rather than regressing. Ultimately, no one knows how it will turn out.

All I'm saying is Rex's body of work as a NFL HC is pretty small as of right now. Do you remember how excited you guys were after the Mangenious took the Jets to the playoffs in his first year? the difference being Rex HAS a resume besides just one and a quarter year of head coaching whereas Mangini HAD no resume except some sketchy "maybe he was or maybe he wasn't the DC for the Pats". I'll take Ryan over every coach we've had since Parcells in '98...I like how players WANT to play for him. We went through those days when even the Godfather of of our coach's son wouldn't even sign with us in John Lynch. Where guys like Bill Cowher and Mike Shanahan actually laughed in the face of people asking them if they would ever coach the Jets-times have changed. I'd worry more about your team's lack of a running game and a defense before pouring water on ours.WTHBS-I still will be rooting for you guys to beat Miami-who I hate the most

At 35, he doesn't have many any big money contracts on the horizon no matter how well he plays in a part time role this season. He only signed with the Jets for the vet minimum. That's what he's looking at in the future.

Pryce was never going to get more than the veteran minimum from anybody beyond this year no matter what happens. Literally zero chance that this has anything to do with money. The great BB's record at this point in his career was 6-14 with an 8 year yet with SB experience. And there is a lot more to be excited about in Rex than there ever was for Mangina. This is a new culture for our Jets and from my point of view is refreshing. I really don't care who likes us. But we're earning respect on the field which is all I care about!
