slowmoe57
As of today Continental Airlines my employer for 25 years will cease to exist We are now the New United Airlines. The worlds biggest -- yipee I don't mind all of this but my move to Chicago in 2012 will suck. I don't know how this will play out but I will look at this as a new chapter in my life. Thats because my position here does not exist in their way of doing things -- I will still have a job but I will not know what I will be doing -- anyway GO JETS
faba
I never had any major issues flying with continental. Hope your job is safe. The first thing they look to do in mergers is cut costs of duplication as you know.
Bruce Banner
I love Chicago so I don't see the problem here. If it was practical for me I would be there instead of effing LA. My favorite description of Chicago is that its the American version of New York.
Maxman
I flew Continental to Vegas. And the Continental workers all seemed pissed off. Customer service didn't exist and they all seemed annoyed. Is this par for the course or related to the United merger? I even upgraded using points to first class and that didn't matter either.

Guess Im too used to flying JetBlue. Hopefully everything will work out for the best for the Moe-Man. Even if it is Chicago.
slowmoe57
What's gonna happen to my OnePass account? From what I hear they will roll-over -- I have nothing against Chicago as a city -- but for me the cost of living is higher as well as housing (You guys in NY/NJ would sh*t a brick if you knew how much I paid for my 4,000 sq ft. House in Houston 10 years ago.) -- city and state tax which I do not have in Texas. And I like playing Golf in Febuary. My wife grew up in WNY and dreads going back to the ice and snow. It is what it is.

I would say yes to that -- none of here are happy and the majority of our workers - myself included are wearing black today. We allways felt we were the superior product but from what I understand it pretty much had to be done.

Obviously, it is what it is (as much as I hate that phrase), and you really just need to make the best of it. Enjoy everything the city has to offer while you're there, take your vacations to warmer climates in the wintertime, and know it's only temporary. Good luck to you, man! Started when I was 24 -- about 10-13 years left -- that is if I want to retire comfortably. edit -- good thing is my seniority definitly will stay -- that will help alot . Whatever happened to the days of a businesses growing organically without having to merge ? What we have in our society is the big getting bigger and lesser number of competitors in a any given industry. Fewer oil companies, fewer pharmaceutical companies. A situation the gives rise to oligopolies. And oligopolies like monopolies give rise to lesser service standards and higher prices and more people being made redundant at these businesses. NJ
Hey Bro - theres plenty worse banishment than coming to Chi-town. Yeah, winter sucketh large here, but there are many, many, positives. Cost of living can't be that different - but housing will be. There's still housing bargains and economical property taxes in nice areas. You will def want to use your employee discount to fly out of here as much as possible Dec - Feb for golf and other warm things, but I think you'll like it here. We can talk about it at the Detroit game next month - I look forward to another diehard Jet fan in the area - there ain't many of us.

Don't know about housing, but I've been to Chic once and I liked everything about it except the cold..lol..the city part of Chicago (skyscrapers and all) is the business district. it's a city surrounded by residential neighborhoods in the city..lol.. I liked it.

I was a Continental employee back in the late '80s as a lead A&P mechanic at LAX. They issued paychecks on friday, then promptly declared bankruptcy screwing me out of thousands of dollars. When it was finally settled in the courts, I got back pennies on the dollar. I asked the payroll department the following week to issue me another check, and they called security to escort me out of the office. I went to the union, and as usual they were worthless. I never flew them after that. Now that United sucked them up from the bottom of scum pool, I'll never fly them either.

It was not a fun place to work here in those days -- everyone was bitter. At least when Bethune took over he did change things for the better. I totally respect your opinion. Alot of people I worked with retired with bitter feelings.
NIGHT STALKER
Ahh, brings back crappy memories for me. In 1991, I had 20 years invested in Pan American World Airlines. The rumors leading up to their demise were many...I was employed at the Miami hub and can remember our big boss coming down from NY to give us a pep talk to keep our morale going. His words still ring in my head till this day. "Pan Am will never go out of business, like IBM, Coca Cola, etc., our logo will forever be part of our culture..." Long story short, I am on vacation a little after Thanksgiving in '91 and having breakfast watching CNN news and they lead in with a breaking story (Pan Am logo in background) that Pan Am closed its doors this morning. I call my boss up and she begins to tell me that wasn't funny (the poor bastards hadn't even heard the news yet) and tells me she will get right back to me. About 10 minutes later she calls me back hysterically crying and that I need to come in to clean out my desk. 20 years down the tubes for me...pension lost...everything gone. So much for the Pan Am logo... Anyway, good luck John with your new venture. Just don't become a Chicago Bears fan.
