Dwayne Jarrett arrested for DUI

Posted by Mike Florio on October 5, 2010 7:16 AM ET

The up-and-down (with more downs that ups) career of Panthers receiverDwayne Jarrett continues.

Our friends at WFNZ radio in Charlotte tell us that Jarrett has been arrested for driving while impaired.

The incident occurred at 2:08 a.m. Tuesday; he's currrent being held on $2,000 bail.

Jarrett, a fourth-year player, has three career starts. In three appearances this year, he has caught two passes for 40 yards.

In June 2008, he pleaded guilty to driving while impaired. In most states, a second offense leads to more serious penalties. Under the league's substance-abuse policy, it most likely means a suspension will be coming, if/when he is convicted or pleads guilty.

Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson received a three-game suspension after pleading guilty to a second-offense DUI charge.

How will the national media respond to this DUI?

More details to come as they become available

It's an outrage, he should definitely be suspended for this week's game, to hell with collective bargaining. This is a chance for the Panthers to be the conscience of the NFL.

He's a bum so he lost his job today.

On the same day that receiver Dwayne Jarrett was arrested for driving while impaired, the Carolina Panthers have parted ways with the second-round pick from the 2007 draft.

The aggressive reaction will prompt many to wonder why the Jets didn't take stronger action against receiver Braylon Edwards when he was arrested for DUI two weeks ago. But there are three big differences between the two cases.

First, it was Jarrett's second DUI incident. Edwards has only one.

Second, Jarrett isn't very good, making it far easier for a team to make an example of a guy.

Third, while the Jets insisted that they couldn't discipline Edwards for behavior that falls within the jurisdiction of the league's substance-abuse policy, the reality is that, while a player can't be suspended by the team, he can be cut.

Paragraph 11 of the standard NFL player contract provides in part as follows: "If at any time, in the sole judgment of Club, Player's skill or performance has been unsatisfactory as compared with that of other players competing for positions on Club's roster, or if Player has engaged in personal conduct reasonably judged by Club to adversely affect or reflect on Club, then Club may terminate this contract."

So that's why the Colts were able to cut defensive tackle Ed Johnson in 2008, after he was arrested for marijuana possession. And it's why the Panthers were able to cut Jarrett.

That said, Jarrett may be able to file a grievance against the Panthers, based on the discrepancy between the player contract and the CBA, which purports to prevent any team-imposed discipline in cases of this nature. Either way, he's no longer a Panther.

Why do we have a feeling that his former coach at USC will come calling?

Well would you look at that, Florio actually defending the Jets on this one. He's not wrong though.

some of you guys need to get used to being good.

Nobody cared what happened with the sadsack jets, and you whined about that. Now we get all kinds of attention, good and bad (our 5th game will be MNF, making 3 pt games so far), and you guys can't deal with that either.

It's a good thing all this attention is on us, it means we're a good team and worth talking about.

This was so inevitable, now the media will of course paint the Panthers as a classy organisation by doing what the Jets didn't. Ignoring that Jarrett might be the worst WR in the NFL.

He does have attitude and balls though, you can never take that away from him.
