JoeWillie
Slow day today. Been thinking about Sanchez's performances going back to playoffs last year. I'm very high on this kid being a VERY good QB for this team for a very long time. I know its a tough question for many on this board to answer, as most are too young to have seen Namath play, but I'll ask it anyway. I know he has a long way to go, but how many people on JN actually think this kid could overtake Namath as the franchise's all time greatest quarterback? JiF
I voted Yes...only because there are a lot more gheys in the world today then when Namath was playing.
The Crusher
Namath was a good QB with legendary star quality and player skills like Crusher. Sanchez will probably be a great QB but has player skills like CTM so I'm thinking he will appeal to a different crowd.
THE ILK
It depends on which sideline reporter he smooches, what commercials he lands, and how good the broad with the pictures of his junk looks. Of course JiF is always right so, the pictures of his junk will matter allot too.
Bob
No. There can only be one original legend.

JiF
I can see now that this thread is going to be a total waste of time. Forget I asked. Sorry, I feel like I derailed it. I dont know dude, its hard to tell. Namath transcended the sport, saved the NFL, had the biggest upset of all time and guaranteed it. The guy made being a sports icon an option. Tough for anyone to ever top that, even if the model wins multiple Super Bowls.
slats
Sanchez can win multiple Super Bowl titles, turn straight, and be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, but there will only ever be one Joe Namath.

PatsFanTX
I can see now that this thread is going to be a total waste of time. Forget I asked. If you started this thread 5-7 years from now it would be more relevant. Trying to compare a QB who has played exactly 1.25 seasons in the NFL to an icon just doesn't work. Trying to compare a QB who has played exactly 1.25 seasons in the NFL to an icon just doesn't work. 5 to 7 years from now, the answer would be easier. What I'm really trying gauge is how many people really feel like we have a QB (after a year and a half) who could be better than Namath before it's all said and done. Does he have that kind of potential ability wise? Does he have that "star quality" that 12 had? I've been following the Jets for 40 years. Nobody understands and appreciates the Legend of Joe Namath more than I do, believe me. He was my idol as a kid. But in all the time I've been watching and following this team, I can not remember having a QB with this kind of poise and talent at such a young age. If Sanchez won a Super Bowl or two in the next 5 years, something I think that is entirely possible with the coaching staff and the youthful talent the Jets currently have on their roster, it would be interesting to see how he would be viewed alongside Namath. L.S. Dylan
If he wins a super bowl, yes. There's not a whole lot of us who saw Namath play, but we are all getting to see Sanchez. I think that has part to do with it. He could be our Namath in 30 years, who knows. But now that I think about it I'm not really sure.. Namath is a legend.. flgreen
Well, he’s already won more playoff games then Joe. He puts up two rings, he’s the guy
Jetsfan80
Not sure how its 7-3 Sanchez, but I voted no. Namath won the most important Super Bowl in NFL history, and it would be HIGHLY difficult to topple that. As for Rex Ryan, now THERE'S a guy who can surpass Namath, or at least take his place on the Jets' "Mount Everest" with Namath, Don Maynard, and Joe Klecko. Keep in mind, the vast majority of Jets fans today never even saw Namath play. IMO, if Sanchez can pull off a Super Bowl victory, he will be viewed as much greater due to the generation gap. I was a huge Namath fan growing up as a kid (his jersey was the first one I ever bought) and respect what he has done for the game, especially the passing game. Back then, QB's got the crap knocked out of them and WR's were mugged all the way down the field. I will always have the utmost respect for Namath. Better as a QB... Hell yes. Kid is really coming along this year. More revered.. NO Can;t imagine any straight man getting married in a Sanchez jersey.
