Thanks for the math lesson. But in the real restaurant world, I have bussers, bartenders, and food runners to tip out. They make money off of my sales, not my tips. And you tip out more on 50 dollars than 25 dollars, because 50 > 25.

Why do you tip out a higher % on 50 than 25? Makes no sense. So if I buy dinner for 20 people and it's $500, do I have to tip 50%? LMFAO. Get another job if you have a problem with 15%.

You don't tip a higher amount. You tip an acceptable amount. 15% is not the standard expected today. Sorry, just isn't. 18-20%. Inflations a bitch ain't it.

Why should a patron coming to a restaurant be concerned with all of that ?

So doubling the tax does not even work any more.

My father once tried that in Florida on a big party, if looks good kill the waitress would be a murder.

I rolled my eyes at him, and took good care of her tough, should have seen the smile on her face when she got done smoking.

OH!!! B)

You shouldn't. Never said they should. My nights get balanced out by enough people who aren't living in the 90's. That doesn't mean I don't knock a glass of water over accidentally on the cheap ones who come back in though.

They should really just raise the prices on menu items, give the waiters/waitresses REAL wages and then make tipping into something you do when you're satisfied. It's been so removed from being about satisfaction that it's just stupid at this point.

That's surprising. Most joints throw a mandatory 18-20 on there for parties.

I actually don't get that so please explain it to me. If anything, you'd think it would almost be the opposite: mandatory +% for solo diners or something. Don't they want to encourage larger parties? And isn't a waiter/waitress happier with getting a bigger table rather than a small one?

You missed my point, we were satisfied, (and so was she ;) ) but my father was used to doubling the tax because in NY that's 16.5% which back in that day was a decent tip.

However in Florida, that's only like 12%, which is why the waitress was turned off, but like I said I took care of that. :)

No, I get you there. I'm just saying I think that waiters should receive real wages based on genuine menu prices and then we can make the tip system more sensible. If it's basically 20% whether you like the service or not then at that point the whole system just doesn't make any sense. And as waiters will tell you, they expect full tip regardless of WHAT happens. I've heard waiters come up with excuses for every possible thing that goes wrong and find someone else in the restaurant to blame everything on (cook, manager, "I had a tough day!", whatever), so yeah, nothing is their fault and you should tip generously no matter what. If that's the case, just raise the friggin prices for wages and make it more optional for say a 10% tip or something.

Nah, it's kind of protection for the server. Theoretically if one were to get a low enough tip on a high enough check, they may have to go into their own pocket. So at the end of the day he/she just paid money to wait on you. And on a large check that could be a lot.

Of course I'm happier with a party. Centralized covers, larger check, guaranteed money. It has it's minuses though. If they don't buy enough I could probably make more flipping two-tops all night.

The restaurants don't want to take any hit though, and if they rise their wages they will.

Absolutely. If I don't check in at making enough to cover minimum wage then the restaurant is legally required to make it up. There's the rub and also another reason why big parties have mandatory grats.

I figured that much.

Isnt that what people do when their food is undercooked? I send back food all the time

And what's wrong with tipping the waitress the normal amount?

We should cut him because he sent back some meat and "undertipped" a waitress.

Shut up.

Bet you fifty dollars and a pack of Starburst that Santonio Holmes has never undertipped a waitress in his entire life.

totally friggin stupid and to demand that people tip 20% now is ridiculous. Acceptable waitservice is 15% and good service is 20%. I've owned a restaurant in the past and I understand the tipping aspect. I am also an accountant who has restaurants as clients and if your selling steaks and your waitstaff aren't making minimum wage with their tips, then they aren't going to be your waitstaff very long, they will go somewhere else.

My place was in a small town in upstate NY and on friday nights, my waiters would make $25 to $40 an hour with tips included.

for you to even suggest he's an arse for only tipping 15% is either done just to be a jerk, or because of some other arrogance. Either way your suggestion that it needs to be 20% is outrageous.

And, for the record, when I get good service, tip can be 25%, acceptable to bad service, 15% and less.

just for the record, I tip more when there is cleavage invloved, wait, what thread am I in ?

Know what's funny? Chicks milk that sh*t for all it's worth and it totally works, which is so unfair. Like the only time that's even an option for me is with lonely older chicks and gay dudes, which is BS because neither demographic tips well to begin with.
