A good friend of mine manages a restaurant down in Manhattan, and apparently he came in to eat last night and not only did he send back an undercooked steak, that piece of dogsh*t only tipped the waitress 15%!!! Like he can't afford to give her 20%!

totally friggin stupid and to demand that people tip 20% now is ridiculous. Acceptable waitservice is 15% and good service is 20%. I've owned a restaurant in the past and I understand the tipping aspect. I am also an accountant who has restaurants as clients and if your selling steaks and your waitstaff aren't making minimum wage with their tips, then they aren't going to be your waitstaff very long, they will go somewhere else.

My place was in a small town in upstate NY and on friday nights, my waiters would make $25 to $40 an hour with tips included.

for you to even suggest he's an arse for only tipping 15% is either done just to be a jerk, or because of some other arrogance. Either way your suggestion that it needs to be 20% is outrageous.

And, for the record, when I get good service, tip can be 25%, acceptable to bad service, 15% and less.

The likelihood of this being why your food doesn't come out correctly is about .5%. Especially since "not telling the chef" isn't even an option.

You're tipping for service, and the help's cost of living varies quite a bit more from place to place than the price of the meal at a comparable upscale joint does, with the obvious exception of the extreme high-end restaurants in huge cities. If anything I think 15% in Cleveland is probably effectively higher than 20% in Manhattan.

I didn't necessarily take the post about Revis literally, it was the attitude about tipping that I was discussing. I couldn't care less whether Revis tips 10% or 25%. It was more along the whole entitlement line. That stuff pisses me off.

Shouldn't matter where you are, the meals will be priced appropriately for the area and 15% is proper in those areas for fair service. For better service you tip more, for horrible service you tip less. It is not an entitlement. If you wish it to be in your own restaurant, start a no tipping trend and increase all prices accordingly and pay your staff wages plus 20% of what customers order.

In some countries they don't tip, which is why waitstaff aren't always happy when they get foreigners.

Let me adjust my statement. Non chain restaurants. There, is that better?

And if you are working at a place with low end food, pick up your ability and get a wait job in a place with higher priced food.

And yes, a $12.99 meal in upstate NY is a $16.99 meal elsewhere and $21.99 and up in other places.

Just because you work in a joint where the prices are lower, doesn't mean that the percentages should change.

If that is the case, then it should be a set a set tip per meal. So, then a $3 tip on a $15 meal should still be a $3 tip on the same meal that costs $30 someplace else.

Understand, that in my yonger days, I have worked for tips and I do tip well. I just don't believe in entitlement of a set amount. If you are rude, or don't pay attention to the customer, or my food comes out cold, that is a reflection on your service and your tip will be lowered aprropriately. When my glass is near empty, you best be nearby asking if I want a refill. If I have to always ask you to refill my coffee cup, lower tip for sure.

I guess that makes sense, I never thought of it much. Basically 99.99% of the meals I am paying for are in this area anyhow. If I eat in Cleveland it is probably for a business trip so I am expensing it anyhow.
