A look at the NY Jets by the numbers

Now that everyone has had a chance to dry off and get some sleep lets take a look at some interesting New York Jets statistics.

1) Jets offensive line one of the best- Heading into the 2010 season many were worried about how the offensive line would perform without left guard Alan Faneca, who was released. Well after 5 games the Jets o-line is statistically one of the best in the business. Check out some of the offensive numbers:

  • Has only allowed 10 QB hits, which is the best in the NFL
  • Has allowed only 7 sacks, which has them tied for 5th in the NFL.
  • Tied for 2nd in the NFL with 5.1 rushing yards per attempt.
  • Have the number #1 rushing attack in the NFL averaging 165.2 yards per game.
  • Have 9 receiving touchdowns with 4 rushing, which is interesting considering the Jets ground and pound philosophy.
  • Ranked 3rd in the NFL in scoring, averaging 27 points per game.
  • The Jets are +11 (first in the NFL) in the give away/take away department with only one lost fumble and no interceptions
Fun Fact about Mark Sanchez (courtesy of the NFL): Sanchez has eight touchdowns versus zero interceptions in 2010 and joins former Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde (2001) as the only quarterbacks since 1970 to have started each of their team’s first five games without throwing an interception a season after recording 20-plus interceptions.

2) Tomlinson amongst league leaders- The Jets LaDainian Tomlinson ranks 5th in the NFL (3rd in the AFC) in rushing with 435 yards. Not so bad for a guy who many thought had nothing left in the tank. For his career LT needs 75 yards rushing to reach 13,000. One game note: Tomlinson has 20 career touchdowns against the Broncos, 19 rushing and 1 receiving.

3) Jets defense by the numbers:

  • Ranked 6th in the NFL in terms of points allowed, giving up 16.2 a game.
  • Ranked 11th in the NFL in terms of yards allowed with 313.6
  • Tied for 7th in the NFL with 12 sacks
  • Tied for first in the NFL with 7 fumbles recovered.
  • 4th in the NFL in rush defense giving up only 79 yards per game.

4) Special teams numbers:

  • Nick Folk is tied for the league lead with 12 field goals made (12/14)
  • Brad Smith is ranked 7th in the NFL averaging 32.2 yards on kickoff returns.
  • Punter Steve Weatherford is ranked 9th in the NFL with 44.9 yards per kick. Weatherford is ranked 8th in the NFL with a net of 39.7.

As you can see the Jets are doing pretty well statistically in all 3 phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams. These numbers will only look to improve as Gang Green takes on some of the lesser teams in the NFL like the Browns and Lions.

Word on Revis: This is quickly becoming a lost season for Darrelle Revis as his hamstring injury has limited his ability to play. While I understand the Jets wanting to get the playmaker on the field, at this point they are much better off keeping him out until after the bye week. It is clear that Revis is uncomfortable playing with the injury, so for all parties involved lets just get the All-Pro back to a hundred percent.

In the meantime it would be nice to see Revis shut his mouth about other players until he can actually get back on the field to defend them.

Im worried about any NFL contest played a mile above sea level. they could conceivably run out of gas on defense. offense has to get TD's to get them ahead. Denver can't stop the run for crap so I bet the Jets will test them in that phase.

NYJ passing offense is still the weak point. 25th in the league. Maybe that's cause of less attempts (the OL runs extremely well as original poster pointed out). Sanchez 0 interceptions is huge in making the passing offense seem alot more productive than it really is...

The weather comes into play more often in September. I dunno the stats but cannot remember the Broncos losing at home in September the past few years except for the Colts game this season. And that's because its very warm.

Once the weather starts cooling down the Broncos advantage diminishes.

Also the Broncos D is banged up. Robert Ayers is out, and so is Brian Dawkins, Andre Goodman, Darcel McBath, and Wesley Woodyard.

Sanchez has been efficient, and the Jets have the #1 rushing attack. They're putting up points. I'm not too concerned about the passing game right now. I'd like to see it featured more, but the (lack of) total production is somewhat by design. They continue to run more than anyone in the league.

It's the passing defense I'm more concerned about.

hahaha what about the pass D ranked 23rd in league.

The defense is not as dominant as it should be and i believe the offense has been bailing them out in the 4 wins.

Welcome!

I'm not worried about the pass D at all. Obviously when Revis comes back it will pick up. I honestly believe that the good offense has caused the defensive numbers to drop off. Teams won't take chances when they are right in the game. Last year, and the opener against the Ravens, the Jets couldn't score and teams sat on the ball. This season the Jets are putting up points. Teams can't run, so they'll throw. The Jets are actually mid-pack in yards per attempt and first in the league in completion percentage. As they sort the DBs out the pass D will take off. What I care about is scoring D and they are sitting at #6.

Extremely good point!

Last year, other teams didn't have to score a lot of points to beat the Jets. This year they have to throw. That's probably part of the reason the Jets' run defense is so good this year, too.

The reason our pass defense has not been so good is because in a few games ( namely the miami game) our blitz was picked up very well leaving our CB's and Secondary as a whole in a bad position. Funny thing is we still won those games and the Defense stepped up in the 4th Quarter to secure the victories. So we gave up some yards but made the big plays when it counted, something we failed to do last year.

I hate when our D gives up yards but I'll take the win any day.

As for the Revis Issue its not all about him. If we cant get to the QB eventually he will get beat as well, even when healthy. The combination of solid bump and run CB and an all out blitz that gets to the QB is what made Revis a monster last year its not ALL about his coverage skills. Just keep in mind he didnt do it all himself last year the QB having only 2.8 secs to throw the ball helped alot.

thanks for the welcome

and yes i do believe that the good offense has something to do with bad defense. i just hope they pick it up more

but i can not say Revis hurting is not a legitimate excuse. i play a high school sport and we say if your on the field your healthy. Of course he will get better but it may be 2 weeks from now or it may be next season you gotta play with what you have and right now playing is 23rd in pass defense.

Welcome to JN. For the record nobody here cares that you play high school sports. We only care about the opinions of those who have played Class A minor league baseball or better.

Featured more? We passed the ball 44 freakin times last week Slats. I know you are in love with the longball but enough is enough.

Even with that game, the Jets are still 26th in the league in pass attempts. Sanchez is still low in completion percentage and yards per attempt, and it's definitely my feeling that the way to get those numbers up is to pass the ball more. I'm not talking about throwing it like the Colts or Broncos, but just getting from 29 to 35 or so attempts a game. Get the QB in a better rhythm, and he'll complete a higher percentage of his passes. Increase that completion percentage, and the ypa should come up, too.

Like to see the Jets pass production up from the 180's, where it is now, up into the 220's or so. Nothing radical.

We will certainly need to improve those areas to make a serious run this year.

Thanks, I didn't realize that, wow. Guess I'm so used to 60/40 run/pass. LOL

Idiot doesnt even realize we havent had a healthy Revis yet.

Who is an idiot?

I see lots of personal attacks from you and lots of bragging about your football skills and knowledge. What we like to see is contributions to the board that don't involve attacking and fighting with other posters.

I apologize for calling jetsjetsjets? an idiot. I was responding to the guy with Mr. T in his avatar, saying he thought we had a new troll. I figured you could call trolls idiots.

I dont know why you say you've seen personal attacks. I havent attacked anyone but Darrelle Revis. I'm not one to insult people when it comes to Football because I realize most people arent as fortunate as I've been in my live. God blessed me with a talent and that talent led to knowledge. Knowledge is power.

I'm sorry if I rub people the wrong way, but you can clearly see that I havent attacked or started a fight with anyone. I just happen to be more knowledgeable on the game of Football.

Your opinion is that you are more knowledgeable. And you are entitled to that. As others are to their opinion. That's what makes a message board go round.

Just avoid the name calling (idiot, etc), thanks.

While we are on the subject of name calling...

I've been pretty nice to you lately, but why haven't we seen our sexy schoolteacher on the report card? I miss her. Did Joe(124) have rights to her photo or something? As you know, not seeing that picture has sent me on binges of insults and profanity in the past.

If you want to ban MS, you have my blessing. It's obviously a troll account.

But if you're just enjoying the extra hits he provides, I understand that, too. Reluctantly. unsure.gif

Definitely good point by dominator and I agree with you as well, slats.

The Fins, Bills, and Vikes all were playing catchup because the Jets O led to an early lead. That means they would throw more, which would increase the passing stats.
