Ellis and Thomas

these dudes remind me of Marvin Jones and Mo Lewis. Two lifetime jets draft picks (3 #1's and a 3) that do nothing but quietly remain in the starting lineup for 10+ years, through multiple coaches and DC's, rack up a couple pro-bowls(Ellis 2, Mo 3) and just play.

True Jets.

He went to three pro bowls. He was treated harshly by Jet fans at the end. They called him Slo-Mo on the old board.

Yeah, that used to kill me. I can completely understand trashing a guy if he turns out to be a POS or if the effort isn't there. Ripping a guy because his skill are naturally declining after contributing that much is a joke.

It wasn't just declining skill due to age. Herm's cover-2 killed MO and Marvin. The team was set up for the 3-4 and that moron, and by extension those that hired him, came in and ran a D that didn't suit most ot the players. Big non-penetrating linemen, graat cover corners that don't like to hit (Glenn, Coleman), in the box safety (Green), and big vet LBs that can play in a phonebooth (Cox, Lewis, Jones). Let's use a D that needs penetrating linemen, small cover LBs, CBs that tackle and play facing the QB and safeties that can cover half the field. Smart. Tampa was the flavor of the month and as usual the Jets tried to jump on the bandwagon instead of doing what works and make sense.

Parcells has a knack at drafting solid DE's.

Who is the 2nd longest tenured Jet behind Ellis?

Bryan Thomas and Brandon Moore were both 2002 I believe, Moore was released and resigned since then but I wouldn't count that against him. He's turned out to be a great guard.

Was Moore even drafted? I thought he was an UDFA DT out of college.

At least Mangini had the good sense to take the next 3 years switching us back to the 3-4 once our Herm-2 defense was installed.

Only thing relevant I'll add to the thread subject is that Ellis has had solid seasons in every defense here. Thomas had a handful of not-horrible starts when Abe was having a shiny new vagina installed late 2004.

Yup, undrafted and spent a year in Europe with the Claymore's, but he's been apart of Jets since 2002 unless you factor in his release. He's the 3rd longest tenured Jet behind Ellis and Thomas. Not Cotchery like lancemehl was suggesting.

I agree. Thing is, that 2005 team was due to be blown up. There were a couple of guys that lost out on the transition - DRob and Vilma - because they didn't fit the new scheme. There were no pieces around that were worth building a team around IMO. True they had suffered from a ton of injuries, but they were like 28th in total D. The team Herm took over was 9-7 and better than mid-pack in D.

On topic: I've always liked Ellis. He's done the job forever at a fairly high level. Thomas? I'm not so fond of him, but he keeps his mouth shut and he's been playing pretty good. Took him long enough.

Good thread. Sean Ellis is in a contract year and is playing like it. i really hop we can figure out a way to keep him. He is the definition of a Jet. Thomas has been not and cold but Rex has been good for him. Just when i start wondering where he is this year he shows up with a good solid play. Two steadfast players that make an impact. neither one are slouches this year.

Not slouches at all, IMO, they are having their best seasons as pros. Ellis is on pace for over 10 sacks and 60 tackles. For a DE in this system...thats pretty ******* awesome.

Thomas hasnt had the same numbers, but watching him, its been his best season since 06 when he went ape sh*t in his contract year. Guy has been all over the place, making plays behind the LOS, getting pressures, I'm surprised he only has 1 sack, thought I'd seen him in on more. But overall, he's been pretty awesome.

Very happy with these 2 long tenured Jets.

love Ellis, but not so much with Thomas. Though he is having a good year.

The dude had 2 good years his whole career. Coincidently both because of contract reasons.

06' was a contract year. Got his big payday and disappeared for 3 years. Now next year is his big salary 3+ mil on that contract, the Jets would have surely cut him with no dead money. So basically he is just saving his a$$.
