slats
Here's the quote everyone will focus on: “Going into a bye, we’re 4-1 right now — you can rest me,” Revis said. “Take this thing into the bye and come back fresh for the (Packers) game.” Go for it! Here's the more pertinent quote to me, and for Revis apologists everywhere: “It probably isn’t really fair to put it in their hands,” the Jets coach admitted yesterday. “I’ve made a ton of mistakes before. This may be another one.” Here's the whole article, come pick your nits. Jets coach Rex Ryan will now shoulder the responsibility of determining player readiness Published: Thursday, October 14, 2010, 6:15 AM Rex Ryan says he was wrong. Not for playing Darrelle Revis Monday night. But for letting the cornerback, bothered by an injured left hamstring, make the call on if he’d play. “It probably isn’t really fair to put it in their hands,” the Jets coach admitted yesterday. “I’ve made a ton of mistakes before. This may be another one.” So moving forward, Ryan is changing his approach: All injury decisions, same as all football decisions, will be “on my shoulders.” It’s a philosophical change for the second-year head coach, who is not afraid to acknowledge he’s still learning along the way. A players’ coach by nature, he’s had to pull up and stamp his authority at critical junctures. Like last season, when he stepped in to take more control of the offense, with a color-coded system designed to help Mark Sanchez limit turnovers. Or last month, after Braylon Edwards’ driving while intoxicated charge, when Ryan sternly told his players he was tired of the embarrassment to the organization. The decision on whether Revis will play this week against the Broncos will come later in the week, Ryan said. But Revis knew what he would do if he were the coach. “Going into a bye, we’re 4-1 right now — you can rest me,” Revis said. “Take this thing into the bye and come back fresh for the (Packers) game.” Revis said Ryan met with him yesterday morning to talk about taking the reins, in what Revis called “a great conversation.” Ryan said he’ll also make sure the staff closely monitors injured players during the game. Revis said he felt soreness in the muscle starting in the first quarter against the Vikings, but Ryan said the player “never said a word” because he’s so competitive. Ryan didn’t realize the swelling was affecting Revis so much until he watched the film and noticed Revis wasn’t finishing plays like usual — the most obvious example when Percy Harvin beat him on a crossing route for a 34-yard touchdown. Ryan also acknowledged that Calvin Pace, in his first game back from surgery on a broken bone in his foot, played more snaps than Ryan wanted. By Pace’s own count, he played all but the last four snaps against Minnesota — and his foot was too sore to practice yesterday. “I’m in the win business,” Ryan said. “But I’m also in the ‘What’s right’ business.” Revis also was listed as a non-participant in yesterday’s practice, taking part in only individual drills. In the portion of practice open to the media, he spent a chunk of time getting his left leg stretched. Revis said the swelling has gone down a lot and that he was able to run a bit with strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi on the side yesterday. It’s possible he could be a game-time decision — though since this week’s game will be played in Denver, the team will be hesitant to have him make the cross-country trip if there’s not a strong chance he’ll play. The Jets, of course, could use the All-Pro player against a pass-happy Broncos offense, in an AFC game. Looking at the big picture, this week ranks higher in importance than the non-conference Vikings game. Revis didn’t second-guess his decision to play, either, though he described the game as being “out there on one leg.” He’s also never been injured in season before, and acknowledged he needs to learn patience. That’s another reason why the head coach should be charged with making the final call, and why Ryan “feels better” taking it on himself. “Do I have all the answers? Absolutely not,” Ryan said. “Will this change? Maybe. But I think this is the best thing for us, going forward.” Link and everything: http://www.nj.com/je...oulder_the.html
slats
New York Times on the same issue, with a couple different quotes peppered in: Darrelle Revis’s Tender Hamstring Is Sore Subject FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The strange season of Darrelle Revis is easily divided into two related headaches. First, the holdout. Now, the hamstring. Jim Mcisaac/Getty Images Darrelle Revis said that during Monday’s game against the Vikings, he felt as if he was “running on one leg.” Revis confirmed Wednesday what he said after the Jets toppled Minnesota on Monday night: he played hurt against the Vikings, from the first quarter on. It was as if, Revis said, he was “running on one leg.” Predictably, Revis did not disclose the pain in his left hamstring to coaches or team doctors. Few players would. The issue led Coach Rex Ryan on Wednesday into previously uncharted territory. He acknowledged he learned a lesson from Revis, and in the future, Ryan said that he would make the decision whether injured players were fit to play. He added that the Jets would monitor Revis more closely the next time he steps onto the field. Ryan repeatedly said “it was not a mistake” to play Revis against the Vikings. Revis insisted he entered the game 100 percent healthy. But Ryan allowed Revis to decide his status, and on Wednesday, Ryan said he would not do that, with any player, again. “It’s going to be put on my shoulders,” Ryan said. Ryan said that his new process would include information from team doctors, trainers, coaches and injured players. Ryan would make the decision, as long as injured players were medically cleared first. At his locker Wednesday, Revis sounded uncertain of his status for Sunday, when the Jets play at Denver, which boasts the second-most prolific passing offense in theN.F.L. (333 yards a game). But the Jets have a bye week after the Broncos game, making it tempting to give Revis rest and treatment over the next two weeks. If he were Ryan, Revis said, “The smartest thing to do is to let this thing rest and see if it will heal right.” Asked if that meant he wanted to sit out Sunday, Revis said he wanted to play. Therein lies the conundrum that forced Ryan to take action. Revis participated in individual drills on Wednesday, but while he asked for additional practice time, he sat out all team portions. He said that the swelling from Monday night went down significantly, and he even pointed to several positives: he did not require a magnetic resonance imaging test, he did not reinjure his hamstring and by playing an entire game he broke up scar tissue there. Still, Ryan and Revis spoke earlier Wednesday, about, Revis, said, “me doing the right thing.” Of course, Revis will not know how his hamstring will react until he plays in another game, because until then, he will not run full speed. Ryan said that during film review, he noticed Revis “wasn’t the same guy he normally is,” especially at the end of the game. He said the Jets would monitor Revis more closely if he does play Sunday, and beyond that. “I had complete confidence that he could play in the game,” Ryan said. “That’s why he was out there. But the fact that, when I said it was going to be his decision, whether he plays, that’s wrong. Because his decision is, he’s going to play.”
DireJet38
This is the downside to Rex being the ultimate players coach in the history of players coaches. I'm just happy he isn't too boorish to admit a mistake. This guy is 100 percent REAL. Refreshing.
Bleedin Green
Bottom line is that Darelle Revis has one person to blame for his injury: Darelle Revis. The guy is not in football shape, that's been clear since day one. Considering that, it applies even more for him than even your average player that it is time for him to shut the **** up. Make whatever excuses you want, the guy has done zero for the Jets this year other than collect their money. And it's not because of bad luck, some sort of freak accident, or even a normal everyday football injury, it is directly caused by his own actions. It's amazing what a talent he has for being so completely full of sh*t. He simultaneously acts like he's somehow the ultimate team player by going on about how he wants to play, yet still manages to always talk about how he's not healthy, or how it would make sense for the coaches to sit him. Then he points the finger everyone else when he plays like complete crap. Regardless of how healthy he is or not, he shouldn't be on the field at this point anyway. He needs to earn his way back onto the field, and he's nowhere close to having accomplished that. When he's getting out-played by not only Cromartie, but Drew Coleman, Dwight Lowery, Kyle Wilson and Marquice Cole, what good is he to the Jets anyway? Revis flushed this season down the toilet for himself, and yet he wants to blame everyone else for it and make an endless list of excuses. It's pathetic. Ryan was right though in that quote you highlighted slats, he was definitely wrong to allow his player to make the decision. By now, he should know better than to trust anything that comes out of Revis' mouth.

I've never debated the fact that the hamstring is directly related to the Jets being unable to get him signed earlier. It's up to everyone now to make sure it heals right so he can get back to being the best CB in the NFL. One positive from playing in the Times article: [Revis] said that the swelling from Monday night went down significantly, and he even pointed to several positives: he did not require a magnetic resonance imaging test, he did not reinjure his hamstring and by playing an entire game he broke up scar tissue there. That actually sounds like he might've done himself some good by playing - I guess as long as new scar tissue doesn't develop. If playing helps him get better, I'm all for him going out there as long as he's not a game-losing liability. If resting is going to help him get better, then I want him to rest. Bruce Banner
This is the whole problem with make rude comments about people like the ones Revis was making about Randy Moss. Aside from getting you punched in the face it puts you in situations where you have to make more stupid decisions to make your old stupid decisions look like something you still support. Having called Moss a slouch on numerous occasions it was up to to Revis to act like a man and play the game. This is why you keep your mouth shut and let your play do the talking. Regardless, at this point it's time for him to shutup, at least until he plays anywhere near the level of being actually worth even half of the money he's getting paid right now. At this point I'd say if he needs to keep working hard to get back to being able to play, then you let him do it on the practice field. There's no point in arguing if it's the injury or his playing shape or anything else anymore. You clearly can't trust him because he's talking out of both sides of his mouth. He wants to play, but he's in pain. If he was the coach he'd bench himself until after the bye, but declared himself 100% healthy last week and also said he thinks playing did him good and he didn't re-injure himself. Well which is it? It's amazing how he's managing to make himself look like the good solider while already setting everyone but himself up to blame for his own future failures. The bottom line, it doesn't matter what the reason is for him playing as poorly as he has. Maybe it's the injury, maybe it's his playing shape, maybe it's his crappy attitude. Whatever it is, he can work it out on the practice fields. He keeps practicing until he's out-playing the other CBs on this roster, and THEN he gets into the game. Until then, he doesn't even deserve to be out there. That way, problem's solved.

For what, 4-2 is ok with him going into a bye so he can sit on his lazy a$$ some more? This comment says one of 2 things-one is that he's ok with losing the game if it means he can sit out, or that he feels the team can win without him, in which case what are we paying him 16.5 million for!!?? [Revis] said that the swelling from Monday night went down significantly, and he even pointed to several positives: he did not require a magnetic resonance imaging test, he did not reinjure his hamstring and by playing an entire game he broke up scar tissue there. So playing is good for him, but he wants to sacrifice the game so he can rest some more through the bye? SLOUCH!!
