My top 5 DL by...

Recommended Posts

3-4 DE/4-3 DE

1. DaQuan Bowers

2. Adrian Clayborn

3. Cameron Jordan

4. Greg Romeus

5. Jared Crick or Allen Bailey - Tossup.

3-4 DE/4-3 DT

1. Christian Ballard

2. Lawrence Guy

3. Nick Fairley

4. Cameron Heyward

5. Marcell Dareus

NT/DT

1. Jerrell Powe

2. Alameda Ta'amu

3. Kendrick Ellis

3. Colby Whitlock

4. Phil Taylor

DE/OLB

1. Robert Quinn

2. Von Miller

3. Adrian Robinson

4. Jack Crawford

5. Cliff Matthews over Ryan Kerrigan

OLB/ILB

1. Akeem Ayers - Seems like he'll get miscast as a 3-4 OLB.

2. Don'ta Hightower - Healthy, he beats Ayers. Ayers' athleticism would just work really well at the position.

3. Bruce Carter

I like Clayborn more than Bowers. And Heyward more than almost anyone.

greg romeus' back is really screwed up.

Bowers is playing like a beast this year...Heyward gets knocked down by me early because I'm just not an OSU guy...In reality the gap between him, Fairley, and Ballard is non-existent to say the least.

I wonder about ranking Ballard so highly when Clayborn takes all the doubles. I've got him highly ranked anyway but still... I wonder if he's as good without the help.

Fairley might not declare... but a heck of a player

Ballard gets doubled too...All of Iowa's DL are solid prospects...they're high energy guys too. Ballard got the nod because of size...

Fairley probably won't declare...I put him on for wishful thinking. He's going to be a top pick next year if he stays healthy.

if Romeus goes in the 4th it will be a victory for him. No one wants a guy after that surgery. he had a herniated disc fused it's a not so good injury.

the other pittsburgh DE jabaal sheard is actually a legit prospect... poor man's John Abraham

I think I said it in the other thread, but Sheard should be on this over Crawford. I just got them mixed up.

nick fairley had a beastly weekend but he's still unlikely to declare. he basically just got to Auburn from Juco.

love talk about the DL but the way Rex finds these guys it's not a position Jets are likely to draft in round 1 or 2. I could see them drafting yet another cornerback, safety or yes wide receiver depending on who they don't re-sign.

You can find any position late in the draft...the difference in the first two rounds is that the talent is just generally better...CB, S, and WR are all positions that also could be had later in the draft.

Fact is, eventually this DL is going to need it's own Ngata/Wilfork/Hampton/Seymour/Henderson/Williams/Stroud...A truly elite DL-man that separates the DL from the rest of the pack.

knowing the Jets scouting department, they are probably in love with Clayborn and Heyward. they love the big 10, especiallly ohio state, and they have probably been scouting those guys for years. jj watt from wisconsin if he declares...

last year they strayed from the big conferences and I don't think they love how it turned out so far... is it fair to say their best pick in 2010 was Terminator in round 5?

can you guys tell me if there is a shaun ellis type in this draft ?

big, studly DE who can play the run and give you a rush now and then.....

there's several but the 2 names I see are Cameron Heyward and Marcel Dareus. as said previously they also probably love Adrian Clayborn.

either way it's a way better DL year than last year (besides SUH) where Jared Odrick was arguably the best of the bunch?

I define a Shaun Ellis type as a guy who could legitimately play 4-3 DE and 3-4 DE...but not 4-3 DT.

With that in mind:

Adrian Clayborne

Daquan Bowers

Cameron Jordan

Jared Crick

For a name that already isn't in this thread...Pernell McPhee from Miss. St...he was all SEC last year...haven't really paid attention to him this year but heard he hasn't been playing as well. Doesn't really have upside as a starter, but after the first few guys not many guys stand out like that.

Heyward is a different kind of lineman from Ellis...more of a pure 3-4 DE/4-3 DT type...Dareus OTOH could work...he fits the Ellis mold with his hand usage and motor which will allow him to be an effective pass rusher.

BTW you were right...Clayborn > Bowers. Bowers' upside is tantalizing, but Clayborn is there...Plus, Ferentz is the truth as a coach.

let me just ammend the statement that Fairley wont declare

because of the lockout and the high probability of a rookie salary cap (or slotting) in the new CBA, the word around the campfire is that everyone who can declare, will declare. we could see a draft with not only Fairley but Cam Newton, Terrelle Prior etc. Super draft in 2011.

let me also add Cameron Jordan is another Shaun Ellis type and hugely underrated. Russ Lande has him higher rated than Clayborn. Not saying I agree but it's notable. Jordan's dad (like Heyward's dad) was a pro bowler in the NFL.

Jordan and Clayborn are probably the two most Ellis-like players in the draft...He's probably a little more project able than Clayborn frame wise (I think he can get to 295 maybe even 300 as a pro) and his motor is amongst the best in the class. I think he's a more talented, more projectable, and maybe even more versatile prospect than Alualu.

I'm getting more pissed I didn't go with my gut and throw Drake Nevis on this list. NT prospect in any system IMO...Could play 3-4 DE and 4-3 UT too. Plays with leverage and is strong as it is...Somewhat similar to Bunkley, but remember Bunkley had a ridiculous combine.
