Why no true screen passes in this offense?

The Jets just don't do it...My thoughts are that Sanchez is just not good at it. He doesn't have the touch to get the ball over the outstretched arms of a rushing lineman. You would think the O-line is good enough and LT is the perfect guy to throw this to. Yes, he throws the quick WR screens, but there's no one in his face for those.

We never had them with Favre or Pennington either. It's a running theme for Schotty. He does tons of pointless shifts and refuses to move a QB around in the pocket too. He also does not generally use crossing patterns for some reason.

I think he is improving so maybe this will be the next development. Slowly, ever so slowly, he might run an offense like the rest of the good teams in the league.

Right now though the Jets are tops in total points, and have a very good rushing offense. I suppose there's no point in peaking right now as long as the wins are coming. We want this team to really get hot around Week 15 or so, and ride that momentum to an SB win.

Its never been a part of the offense...even when we had the perfect screen threat with Leon. We dont run it. So I think its just Schotty offense.

Something something OC sucks.

We never use screens with Schotty...all that stuff Leon Washington would rip people with was more of our great lineage of QBs overcoming Schitty's playbook.

Setting up a "true screen" is one of the harder things for an offense to learn to do. It requires the whole unit focused on making the play happen, and we've never really had a year to year offensive unit. Ignore this though...I'm speaking out of my a$$ and Schotty's levy needs to come down.

Gato, we've had four different starting QBs and 5-6 regular running backs in the time Schotty's been the OC yet we've never run a traditional RB screen that entire time. Do you really think that is a coincidence?

This has nothing to do with whether or not you think he is a good coach (even though he is not) it's merely a fact. Schotty doesn't believe in the screen pass. Anyone can guess why (I guess its because he is a stupid, stupid man) but you can't deny that its a play that has been completely missing in his five years as the Jets OC.

Thank you, Ive been asking for screens for years. Other teams Murder us with them, and we dont do them. LT would be a beast with them for us, he did this great with his other "team".

I would love to see the Jets do them more, I think Sanchez isnt equipped for them, the coupld of times I think we were gonna run them, the passes were horrendous.

I don't think it's coincidence...I think you just made that up.

The Jets have run screen passes with Schottenheimer. They've even tried to run them this year....Sanchez sucks at it...period. It's one of the hardest plays for a young QB to run...A screen play requires a QB who's cool enough in the pocket to stand there and probably eat some contact on the defense's blitz...It's the passing version of a draw play...should we get on Callahan for not design enough draw plays? The offensive coaching staff is just doing what the players show they can do well in practice and say they can do well in meeting.

You guys keep editing your memories to fit your opinions though...It's kinda sad at this point to see how far this fanbase wants to go to find aaaaaaaannyyy possibly minor reason to call this guy a bad coach. F*ckin...let it go...he's clearly getting the job done this year. Seriously, the garbage I hear about this offensive scheme is absolutely amazing...Wtf do you guys think other teams do? Run and pass at will with no kind of tomfoolery involved? What f*ckin year are you guys living in?

Double post.

Lol the levy broke and we didn't even lose. This fanbase man...You guys need another Favre d*ck story or something to keep you from finding something to whine about...5-1 team with the offense outperforming the D and you're bitching about a perceived lack of screen passes...holy crap I can't wait until that loser mentality dies.

The Jets haven't had a guard that can play in space since Pete Kendall. Moore and Slauson are maulers and Faneca's days of running down OLB's at the second level had long since past. Add to that the fact that neither Thomas Jones or Shonn Greene are/were competent receivers and I think that personnel is what keeps the Jets from running screens.

Gato,

I don't like Schotty at all. He has been good this year though. I think you bring up a valid point.

It Is the Loser Mentality that is keeping a lot of the age old whining in place here.

Good Call, I'm sure I've been guilty of complaining about a lot of things that probably should just be let go.

hey, we're 5-1. That's pretty cool for now.

At least we are running the stretch play now. A lot of teams love that play and run it if they have a good back. The Redskins were abusing it too with Torain.

I wanna see some good old power sweeps. I think with the setup of our line, running some power sweep rights could be great, especially if we are on the left hash mark. I love LT, but I think Greene would be deadly with that too, just imagining the poor DBs bewildered looks with Greene barreling down on them is cracking me up right now.

+1

I would add that other than with Favre, we have not had a downfield passing threat until right now. The board is constantly whining for screen passes as if they take the place of running actual pass plays. When teams don't respect the pass (Penny, Clemens, '09 Sanchez) they aren't sending crazy pressure and they key the running back. That means they eat up screens. The screen pass is used to augment the passing game and keep the defense honest. We can do that with our running game anyway. FWIW, they ran some with Favre. I think they will implement some if the passing game continues to succeed.
