So we actually have decent practice squad talent...

I find that interesting. This is somewhat significant because Rex finds himself alot of talent from these types of talents...for instance one of our starting ILBs...he's also developed DL talent (Kelly Gregg for instance):

Jarron Gilbert - I think 90% of this fanbase was fapping to the mere possibility that this guy could be drafted by the Jets. I think Rex thinks he's got legit talent for this D, and his size and athleticism are reminiscent of the two older DEs on the roster (Pryce and Ellis). He's got everything it takes to make it in this league, and personally I think him hitting the market was a matter of the Bears being lazy about developing talent.

Cody Brown - A former 2nd round pick of Arizona's, a team with a scouting department I like. I think he's got the upside to be a rotational LB, but not a starter. Something along the lines of Antwan Barnes. Maybe one day 4-5 years from now he can start for someone, but it's not in the near future for him IMO.

Martin Tevaseu - UDFA from 2010 signed by us. 6'2 325...Actually sounds like he's got the potential to be a Pouha replacement:

Positives: Large space eater in the middle of the line who commands double-team blocks. Starts with good knee bend, plays with solid pad level, and fires off the snap with a good first step. Jolts defenders at the point of attack, displays power in his lower body and forceful up the field. Bulrushes opponents off the line of scrimmage and show the ability to collapse the pocket.

Negatives: Does not play with great balance. Gets tall as the play proceeds, rarely uses his hands, and makes himself an easy target to block. More of a straight-line defender who lacks pass-rushing skills.

Has our practice squad produced anything since Mike DeVito? Sounds like there's talent down the pipe.

I'm excited we managed to get Jarron. Saw the tape of him during his draft year and I was quite upset on day two when the bears picked him with what I believe was the first pick of the day. Funny how things work out though. Hopefully Rex can develop him into a star, he definitely has the talent!!

If by 90% you mean one beaversh*t-crazy banhammerer with a you betcha fetish.

True, but Ham's campaign swayed alot of people. For some reason, a Ham campaign always did/does.

Gilbert's really got the tools to get there. Same thing for that Dixon guy from Hampton on the active roster. Rex has never really had a problem developing complimentary linemen...Bannan...Edwards...Gregg...Douglas...Franklin. Seems like he's trying to put up another factory here.

I obviously hope that at least one of these guys pans out but the fact that we're thin on the D-Line and still carrying 4 TE's makes me wonder how good these guys actually are at this point. Right now we need a solid DT to rotate in more than we need a 4th TE IMO.

They have Dixon for that purpose.

Our DL depth right now is...

Ellis

Pouha

DeVito

Price

Gholston

Green

Dixon

Kroul

Not a super unit, but 8 guys is alot. None of them is really sucking either, though Gholston still doesn't have a sack.

While they didn't all necessarily take the stop on the practice squad (which I don't think that Devito even did), the Jets have actually done pretty decent for themselves in recent years with UDFA.

The ones I could come up pretty quickly weren't all that bad. Granted these aren't guys that have broken through the starting lineup, but some have pretty important rolls on this team and most are only their first few years in the league, so there's still time yet. This also isn't counting guys like Kenwin Cummings (waived today), Marques Murrell or Wallace Wright (left via FA). Consider on defense you've got Jamaal Westerman, Matt Kroul, James Ihedigbo, and obviously Devito, who were all UDFA's by the Jets, some of who were on the PS. While Devito may be the only starter, Kroul's the only guy on that list who isn't getting significant playing time.

Don’t forget about Pito. He had a very serious injury, but Rex was very high on him. If he hadn’t been injured I think he would be in a regular rotation this season

Pito might have screwed himself getting hurt. He's got the raw size, but unless he's got some ridiculous athleticism I don't know about he's probably not going to be a long term starter here. With Gilbert and Dixon in the organization he's going to have to fight hard to come back and then earn playing time here.

Not that Gilbert is a lock...just that given his talent and lack of injury he and Pito are probably pretty close together on the organizational depth chart.

If I had to guess the organizational depth chart it'd be something like:

Ellis

Jenkins

DeVito

Pouha

Pryce

Gholston

Green

Dixon

Kroul

Pito

Gilbert

Tevaseu

I'm not counting DEs who usually play OLB. I could see no Pryce (age), Green (mediocrity and age), and Kroul (mediocrity) in the next season. Pito will have to work his a$$ off to hang around too.

Ellis will probably be here for another 2-3 years unless something drastic happens (retirement, injury, or he wants too much money)...DeVito...Pouha...Gholston unless he can be traded (and that's not happening)...Dixon...Gilbert and Tevaseu will probably be PS until they're decent...Jenkins I'm 60/40 on him being here, and they're probably not going to be counting on him. That's 8 guys...2 of the better talents are closer to retirement than not...4 of those guys (Gholston, Dixon, Gilbert, and Tevaseu) have alot to prove. All I see is a unit that is going to see some heavy turnover. With a draft and FA this DL should look waaaaay different even next year, and 2-3 years from now it should be a Rex built unit (+ DeVito).

Pito may be liked, but the next 2-3 years should be ridiculously competitive on the DL.
