Share 0 Comments The Jets announced that linebacker Josh Mauga will move from the practice squad to the 53-man roster today.

Mauga, a four-year starter at Nevada, was signed to the practice squad on September 6, 2010, originally coming to the team as an undrafted free agent in 2009. His drive for the 53-man roster was slowed significantly by a concussion sustained during a goal line drill in training camp.

Kenwin Cummings, who was waived on Oct. 22, was added to the practice squad as well. He made his NFL debut against the Bengals last year on special teams. The Wingate graduate was active for three games this year and did not record any tackles.

Cummings continues to make strides despite having Type 1 diabetes, which he learned he had at age 15.

The Jets also waived defensive tackle Howard Green. Green was signed by the team on Oct. 4, and last year recorded 37 tackles in 12 games with the team. He was also waived by the Redskins this season.

why'd they cut Green....i liked him...

The rumor is that DT Jarron Gilbert will be moved to the active roster

Hearing: #Jets will promote DL Jarron Gilbert to the active roster within the next few days. I love this move, curious to see what he's got. 5 minutes ago via web

@JennyVrentas Not sure if this means anything BUT: DL Jarron Gilbert was briefly listed on 53-man roster on Jets site. It changed.

If this kid lives up to the hype this could help our pass rush.

Howard Green must live a very interesting life. He might be resigned after the pass-happy Packers leave town.

If Gilbert is active I hope he's been working on his game. I love the upside, but upside can only carry you so far in this league...especially if you're drafted outside of the first round.

Also, Gholston isn't getting cut anytime soon.

Agreed. I don't think Green will take everything home. He'll just relax and get ready for week 9. The interesting thing to me is Gilbert at DT. I know the Bears were trying him there, but that was 4-3 DT. Most of us liked him out of college as a 3-4 DE. He had supposedly put on weight and Rex is a tweener guy, so maybe he'll play DT or DE.

If Gilbert is moved to the 53, and I’m not sure he will be, thought it would have happened by now, he will most likely play DE.

This guy is kind of the poor man’s Vernon Gholston. All kinds of athletic ability and promise, just hasn’t brought it to the field at this level. Love to see him in a pass rush situation.

Gholston isn’t going anywhere this year. Next year he probably gets the boot. Green’s back next week.

There's a poorer version of Gholston

The Jets can only cut certain players without them going on waivers based on their years of NFL service. Green is one of them. They can cut him outright without worrying about another team claiming him off the waiver wire. This way they can re-sign him anytime.

That's why they cut TRich right before the season in order to re-work the roster with Revis coming off the exempt list. Tanny was able to rework the roster and re-sign TRich the next day.

Oh, and as mentioned above ... with the Packers being a pass-happy team the Jets will be using more DBs so there won't be a need for Green this week.

The Jets have Ellis, Pouha, DeVito, and Price that are guaranteed active this week. If Kroul is active that's all the Jets will need on the DLine.

Agree with most of this, but if they aren't going to have Gilbert active there wouldn't be much sense in moving him to the roster. They could have just kept Green on the roster and left him inactive. Of course, I've never seen definitively that Gilbert was moved to the active roster, so maybe he will stay on the PS.

Gilbert isn't on the roster yet. It was an unconfirmed rumor. Vrentas and Gallo have not been able to confirm it.

Thus, as of today, Gilbert is still on the PS.

Right. I imagine whoever they cut Green for will be active this week. It's strange that they'd cut the guy and didn't make another move yet. Otherwise there was some other reason they cut Green because it makes no sense to cut the guy for somebody that isn't playing Sunday. Maybe somebody is dinged and they are worried they'll need another body or maybe they don't like what Green's been showing and there is somebody they like out there - raid a practice squad or something.

Well, Vrentas just reported that Gilbert has been elevated to roster. So we'll see who is activated for the game.
