Look ahead: Calvin Pace on the hot seat

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

The Record

New Meadowlands Stadium

Sunday, 1 o'clock

TV: Ch. 5

Early line: Jets by 6

The line marks only the fourth time the Jets have been this hefty a home favorite under second-year coach Rex Ryan. They lost outright to Buffalo and Atlanta laying 6 or more last season, but routed Cincinnati as a 10-point favorite. Green Bay still has a quality offense with rising star Aaron Rodgers at QB, but the season-ending injuries to Don Bosco product Ryan Grant and TE Jermichael Finley have contributed to the Packers' inconsistency in the clutch.

On the hot seat

Calvin Pace

Pace had a strong return from a broken right foot when he made his 2010 debut against Minnesota on Oct. 11, recording 1 1/2 sacks. But he had a quieter game against Denver, likely feeling the effects of lingering soreness in the foot after exerting himself against the Vikings. The moves the Jets made Tuesday (signing LB Josh Mauga, releasing DT Howard Green) aren't likely to have much impact in the sack department. Pace is the Jets' best pure pass rusher, and he and the rest of the front seven will be helped if CB Darrelle Revis is back to his old lockdown self.

Game plan

The Jets' sixth-ranked run defense will look to clamp down on Brandon Jackson, Grant's replacement who is averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and short-yardage specialist John Kuhn (3.8). If they can do that and there's a good chance they will, it would be easier to put pressure on Rodgers, who has 12 touchdown passes and nine inteceptions. The Jets' strong running game should be able to take advantage of a banged-up Green Bay front seven, and that would open things up for more play-action passes from Mark Sanchez. Expect offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to have some tricks up his sleeve after the bye.

Why is Pace on the hot seat? I don't get it.

Schotty better not try any tricks. We don't need tricks. God this guy...Bet you he's going to have stupid motion...I sh*t on motion. Just line them up and knock them down Schotty...this offense is good enough to do that. Sanchez is so on that level in Year 2.

I don't think I'm worried at all about Pace and the D for the rest of the year...They'll have to prove me right on Sunday but I expect nothing less than dominance.

He isnt. This is a stupid article that makes no sense.

Maybe he just means he's crucial to our pass rushing success. I mean, what's the team going to do? Cut him mid season because he's been injured?

The Jets do need Pace to get up to speed nearly as much as they need Revis, but "hot seat" is a bit much.

Agreed. Pace's presence can already be felt and I only see him being a huge factor as always. Hot seat is out of the question.

Who should be on the hot seat is the DL for the lack of pressure.

I think this might be a "feature". Every week he points out something to look for - in this case Pace's production. I don't think it actually means Pace is in danger of losing his job. Who would take it? Taylor hasn't done much, Thomas is starting already and isn't lighting the world on fire. There isn't much else.
