Jets QB Mark Sanchez takes bye-week to address turnovers, talks about 'overrated' claims

Mark Sanchez had a feeling he wasn't at his best in the midst of his last game against the Denver Broncos.

His footwork, normally poised and steady, became erratic. Jets coach Rex Ryan said that he didn't trust the protection around him -- or sometimes trusted it too much.

"I was moving my feet around a little too much in the pocket," Sanchez said after practice Wednesday. "Just got sloppy and gonna get better."

Like Darrelle Revis, Sanchez thought that the bye week came at an opportune time, allowing him plenty of opportunities to take a good look at his first two turnovers of the season.

"That's what that the off week was for," Sanchez said. "Just kind of evaluate the mistakes you made. I'm always going to improve, get better each week.

"Especially this last game, just getting away from some of the fundamentals, holding the ball in one hand, getting my feet set and I was pleased the way we rallied and won the game and just ball security issues that last game, up until then I was doing pretty well."

Sanchez also spoke about what seems to be an increased role for Santonio Holmes in the coming weeks. As he becomes more acclimated to the offense, Sanchez said it will provide more challenges to opposing defenses in coverage.

"I think the longer we're together the better we'll mesh. I like the way Santonio has been able to add things, it puts defenses in a tough spot where they're going to have to figure out if they want to match a corner on either Santonio or Braylon than let (Jerricho Cotchery) run free. So it's good for us.

"If we hit one of those days where I'm hitting 70 percent, it's going to be deadly, it's going to take a little more focus, a little more attention to detail, and just getting back to some of those fundamentals that got away from me."

Overrated?

A player poll conducted by Sports Illustrated pegged Mark Sanchez and Albert Haynesworth as tied for the third most overrated player in the NFL -- both clocked in at five percent, or 12 votes each out of the 239 polled.

"I don't know, it doesn't matter," Sanchez said. "You hear about it but it doesn't change anything going on here."

Perhaps to build up good karma, Sanchez managed to slip in a complement about Sunday's opposing quarterback Aaron Rodgers, calling him underrated.

"He's definitely one of the most underrated QB's in the league," Sanchez said. "He gets the ball to his receivers quick, he's accurate on the run, he's a really good leader on the team."

Damien Woody talked about how he's still very much aware of what Clay Matthews and the Packers defense can do to the Jets offense on Sunday despite a bevy of injuries.

One of the things he's doing to stop it? Practice against Vernon Gholston and Jamaal Westerman one-on-one.

The smaller, quicker feel gives Woody -- who will be primarily matched up against Matthews on Sunday -- a good base for what he can expect.

"Say for instance, myself, we'll have a guy that can simulate Matthews and his rush moves," Woody said. "Jamaal Westerman, Vernon Gholston, those guys do a heck of a job every week just simulating the team's best pass rushes and on the flip side it gets them help on their pass rushes. Those guys are doing a heck of a heck of a job simulating Matthews.

"Obviously Matthews is a stand-up linebacker so those guys fit the mold of Matthews -- they come pretty hard off the edge."

Look for Matthews to have a huge day on Sunday.

This would be like having Antonio Cromartie trying to cover Nick Folk in preparation for a match up with Roddy White.

I think I'll stop thinking Sanchez is going to become a turnover machine when the 16th game of the regular season wraps up. He scares me sometimes, and we all know Schotty likes to call INTs in the second half of the season.

Also, this Matthews on Woody matchup terrifies me. Maybe they flex D'Brick around on the line like that one game earlier this year...Prob. not...They're definitely going to have to give Woody help.

As long as it's not like last season.

The first play we ran after the bye was IIRC an ugly INT against Jacksonville. We came out so flat in that game it was scary.

Can't afford sh*t like that this time round, hopefully Rex has learned from that and has these guys ready to go.
