Aaron Rodgers calls out Jets fans

Rex Ryan has had a good rapport with Jets fans in his two seasons at the helm of the Green & White football operations. Rex has called out the faithful a few times, the first time for the Jets’ 2009 home opener against New England.

The fans accepted the challenge and produced a hostile environment that was called by some one of the four loudest crowds in the Jets’ 26-year history at the old Meadowlands stadium and contributed to the inspiring 16-9 victory.

Ryan called on the fans again last week when he said of the then upcoming game against the Packers, “I like the fact that we’re playing at home with our fan base. You’re not only playing us, you’re playing our fans, too.”

Which made the reality of Sunday’s unloud crowd somewhat perplexing. It has been noted by a few observers at the Jets-Green Bay game that the fans were not at their best during the Halloween proceedings. And one of those observers just happened to be wearing green and gold and shouting signals to the visiting team’s offense during that game.

“To be honest with you, it wasn’t that wild,” Packers QB Aaron Rodgers told Jay Glazer on foxsports.com’s “After Party” when Glazer asked him Monday about the scene in the New Meadowlands Stadium stands. “The fans, a lot of them, didn’t show up until the second quarter. And it wasn’t as loud as I expected.

“I mean, I think all of us were very surprised that a 5-1 team, as well as they were playing, it wasn’t a louder stadium, to be honest with you.”

It’s certainly true that many were reacting to the results of a Jets offense that was shut out for the first time in 31 home games, or since the 10-0 loss to the Bears in November 2006. On the other hand, whatever kind of game this was, it was very much a game with the Jets trailing only by 3-0 until 6½ minutes remained.

Dan Leberfeld, my good friend from jetsconfidential.com, said he, too, noticed the lack of an edge in the silver seats.

“I think the problem was so many Packers fans were in attendance, so it impacted the din of the crowd,” said Leberfeld. “I think the crowd at the upcoming Houston game will be louder because Texan fans don’t travel as well.”

But, Leberfeld analyzed, “for a team to have a great homefield advantage, the fans need to be deafening on all downs that the other team has the ball on offense. That doesn’t always happen at Jets games, because some fans, not all, of course, wait for Fireman Ed’s lead, and he’s not always on the screen for these downs.”

What are your thoughts, all you Radar readers in Jets Nation? Did Rodgers have a point or is this a natural reaction to no touchdowns or an NFC North foe? Do Jets fans more often rock the stands or sit on their hands? Were they loud enough or too quiet Sunday? Did they have a fair reason for their reaction? And fans of all stripes should be welcomed into the other teams’ home stadium, but how do so many fans of, say, the Packers and Steelers get into the Home of the Jets on gameday?

Lay it on me, Jets fans. We’ll post your comments the rest of today and on into tomorrow before reporting begins on the Jets’ preparations for the first of two consecutive road games, at Ford Field in Detroit, before they return to NMS for their next home game on Nov. 21 against those aforementioned Texans.

From someone who was at the first 3 games, all were very loud and the atmosphere was great I could feel the decrease in atmosphere in the air.

It was the first 1pm home game, against an nfc team, so I did expect it to be somewhat not as loud but it ended up being worse then expected.

There were a loooooot of Green Bay fans in the stands. People brought the noise early but as the game went on everything the offense was doing was so frustrating for everybody. Collectively people just didn't have it in them. With what you pay for a game experience now, and the stadium being so lackluster, you wind up having a "I can't believe I shelled out x dollars for this" mindset.

It's just a different feel all together. It's feels like it's not that people arent loud, its more that those who used to be loud just aren't there anymore.

What can you expect when it costs the average person nearly a week's salary to to take a family of 4?

Loud fans were priced out.

Then how do you accound for the Jets crowd sucking at the old stadium as well? They never arrived on time, booed the first sign of something bad, and leave early in the 4th to beat the traffic.

That "Kuuuuhn" chant for the Green Bay fullback was WAY too loud. I was hoping that it was Jets fans being sarcastic. Alas, it appears not to be the case.

It's too cold, it's overpriced, the parking sucks, the travel sucks, there's no dome, you can't tailgate...it goes on and on.

What the **** do they expect? You think a bunch of businessmen in luxury suites are going to be able to make noise that will get to the field?

The owners are too greedy and just don't understand that poorer more passionate fans are louder and give you a better home field advantage. Most of the country is pretty poor compared to the NYC area. They don't charge nearly as much for things as they do here.

I can't imagine having a few kids and wanting to take your family to a Jet game. 2 kids and your wife...you're looking at what, close to a grand just for decent seats in the upper deck? Between tickets, food, parking, God-forbid a souvenir or two for them. Yeesh.

Looked like aloooot of empty seats in that stadium. People just aren't going to pay that much loot, regardless of what you put on the field.

BUT...BUT...WE HAVE AN IDENTITY NOW! ITS NOT CALLED GIANTS STADIUM ANYMORE!

Not to sound like BZ but my section is loud. The lower level in general seems loud. I look up at the uppers and they seem loud.

Who knew that 40,000 club seats in the middle would have an impact? Go figure.

You better bring a megaphone to the game next time. this was the first home game I didnt go to, and the crowd was very quiet. lol..I watched all the other home games on nfl replay and it was a lot louder! see what happens when I dont go? lol

TBH..That game was so boring that watching paint dry would be more interesting. Jet fans have always been a reactive crowd. the Jets need to do something to get them involved.

Those that say the crowd at the old stadium sucked? I say go back in time to the 1999 playoff game against the Jaguars and the last game of 2002 and the playoff game against the Colts in 2002. I was at all 3 and the crowd was rocking!

I guess it's saying something that we basically let an opposing QB play in relative silence throughout the whole game in our stadium and yet he could still only muster up 3 points on his own without the help of our birdbrained punter or an opponent that has to go for it on 4th down deep in their own territory. Seriously, Rogers basically just admitted that even with the help of the opposing crowd he still was basically incompetent.

The crowd was "quiet" because the JETS sucked... the crowd was plenty loud on defense...

This is all nonsense... what do you expect a crowd to be like when they cannot even get a first down... it was depressing.
