Blackout
WASHINGTON (AP) - A female-to-male transgender member of the George Washington women's basketball team wants to be identified as a man this season. Junior Kye Allums _ who used to be known as Kay-Kay _ is referred to on the school's website as a "male member of George Washington's women's basketball team." "GW has been supportive during this transition. This means a lot. I didn't choose to be born in this body and feel the way I do. I decided to transition _ that is, change my name and pronouns _ because it bothered me to hide who I am, and I am trying to help myself and others to be who they are," Allums said in a statement posted Tuesday on the website. "I told my teammates first, and they, including my coaches, have supported me. My teammates have embraced me as the big brother of the team," continued Allums, who turned 21 last month. "They have been my family, and I love them all." A story posted Monday on outsports.com reported that "Allums will be the first publicly transgender person" to play NCAA Division I college basketball. NCAA spokesman Rick Nixon did not immediately reply to a request for comment Tuesday from the AP. GW senior vice provost Robert Chernak, who is the school's senior vice president for student academic and support services, said Allums "has informed the university that he will not begin any medical or drug protocols while a student-athlete. The university consulted the NCAA regarding his competitive status. Kye will continue to be a member of the women's basketball team." Chernak also said the university "supports Kye and his right to make this decision." Allums started 20 games for George Washington last season, averaging 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in 24.9 minutes. Allums scored a career-high 21 points in a 58-50 victory over La Salle on Jan. 24. According to GW's website, Allums was honored as the 2008 Minnesota Miss Basketball. "The George Washington University women's basketball program, including myself, support Kye's right to make this decision," head coach Mike Bozeman said in a statement on the school's website. George Washington opens its 2010-11 season on Nov. 13 against Green Bay in a tournament at Minneapolis.

billybroome
It's the chicks who were once dudes that bother me. I have two transgender people who live next door to me. Even though they've installed boobs, lopped off their junk, pluck their beards daily, and wear women's clothing, there is just no hiding the fact they are genetically male. Square jaws, tattooed arms, big shoulders, hands, feet, even the Adams apples are impossible to ignore, not to mention one of them is a former biker named "Tree" who stands 6'6" and insists on going out in heels! It's just creepy.
JerryK
If the chick can play at the mens' level, I'm fine with it. The NBA did it for Alan Iverson.
slats
My kids go to school with a girl who now wants to be identified as a boy. At 16 years old, he's started taking hormones and has had his name legally changed to a boy's. The kid's really super smart, a pretty talented musician, and a serious self-promoter. He's (I'm practicing with these pronouns, as I know the kid and his family, too) been on Larry King and Tyra Banks. I'm really impressed with the way his parents are dealing. I'm extremely liberal socially, and I'd have a tough time going this route with one of my kids. There's a couple other trans-kids in the High School, but I think they're copy-cats. Of course, I don't know them. Only hear that they haven't gone to the same extremes just yet. Worked with a guy who was transgendering into a female, too. Another really smart guy, like nuclear engineer smart. He was over 6' tall and well over 200 pounds. In the all male environment of power plant workers, he had a rough time of it. You gotta be serious wearing a bra under that uniform, with a woman's watch and glasses. Definitely struck me how bright both these people are. I feel bad for these transgender folks. That's gotta be a unique brand of suffering.
Jets Voice of Reason
The title is wrong. The person is still playing in the women's league, the person just wants to be identified as a male. She's not taking hormones or anything like that.

Bugg
It's important to teach your children to be polite and respectful of other people's lifestyles; live and let live. I have enough trouble living my life without trying to order anyone else around. Worked with and had clients who were gay and even in one case a well-known crossdreser. None of my damn business how they lived. If you are an adult and you ahve made that decision, good for you. we shouldn't define people by whom they choose to sleep with. Yet, I'm sorry. Messing with your plumbing is disordered and wrong. While no one should harm or harass these people the idea no one will be even a little bit judgmental in these cases is really a PC bridge too far. May be some judgmental scorn-WTF?- would stop this silliness. And possbily they wouldn't have to deal with any suffering. When I hear stories like Slats, I'm more inclined to keep my son in Catholic school through high school where such idiocy would not be tolerated. Though I know from a mom being a NYC teacher and other family with kids in NYC public schools, a tranny kid would be getting some serious attention and not in a general school. Don't care how bright the person is, they are troubled. Also, the truth is NCAA women's basketball is very popular with lesbians and many players happen to be lesbians. There's nothing wrong with that; again, live and let live. These ladies are old enough to decide for themselves. If a man/woman tranny wants to play with the ladies, though, that would be unfair. vinnys025
Negative rep ? Why ? I don't know, I didn't do it. But who cares what "it" is, they just want to play a game. After all, it is just a game. No big deal here. I don't see any problems.

SMH Sadly discrimination against homosexuals and Trannys won't go away until the baby boomers die off. The younger generation is far more liberal. Wow, do you have me about a million percent wrong. I actually think it's more likely that people of higher intelligence will have these transgender feelings, not the other way around. Higher intelligence seems to bring about a lot of mental -for lack of a better word- disorders. I know alcoholics have a higher median IQ than the general population, for instance. No, it's more that I was struck by the idea that I was right. Much of the younger generation is a lot more conservative than I am. Although, I think in all your tolerance, you're showing a bigotry towards your elders.

I misunderstood your post, i thought you were saying it struck you as odd that people as smart as they would want a sex change or live the trans lifestyle. I dont discriminate against the old, but fact of the matter is, they are the ones who are still clinging to "so called" traditional values i.e Homosexuality and Gay marriage or transgenders. My bad for misunderstanding.

My bad for misunderstanding. I disagree here. The 60s generation of parents were so liberal that there's an equally strong reactionary movement to return to more conservative values meant to protect us from the craziness (and high crime rate) of the 60s in the first place. My viewpoints are more conservative than that of my parents, and I'm not at all alone in that. I'm of the opinion that there are two genders: Male and female. Apparently that simple dichotomy is not sufficient anymore; we have to factor in which gender people "feel" like. Who knew.
