THE ILK
Rex on Gholston: 'He's gonna be an excellent player' Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2010/11/rex-on-gholston-hes-gonna-be-a.html#ixzz14RK9OLPF By Kevin Armstrong Rex Ryan was not around when the Jets selected Vernon Gholston with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 draft, but he said Friday that he would not have chosen him that high. "No, not that high," Ryan said. "Now? I would. Right now I like the way how he plays." Gholston, a standout linebacker at Ohio State, switched to defensive end as a rookie under coach Eric Mangini, but has yet to record a sack in 35 career games. Ryan reasoned that Gholston has taken a longer time to develop than the franchise expected, but he has been diligent in improving and accepting his role in dealing with the dirty work. He has five tackles this season, his third. "He's gonna be an excellent player I really think that," Ryan said. Ryan added that heightened expectations came with the number attached to the pick, which led fans to believe they may have another Lawrence Taylor in the lineup. "There's only one Lawrence Taylor," said Ryan, who believes Gholston could have a long career with the Jets despite his output to date. * * * Ryan is aware of the homecoming weekend that several of his players with Detroit-area ties will have against the Lions, and he is looking to take advantage of the "hometown hero" effect. When players return to their native cities, Ryan said former players of his have had an uncanny ability to have big games. LBs Calvin Pace, Bart Scott and David Harris were all born there, as was Gholston. Braylon Edwards grew up nearby. Damien Woody played four seasons for the Lions, and S Eric Smith played at Michigan State. * * * S Brodney Poole, who was taken out of practice Thursday afternoon following a collision with cornerback Darrelle Revis, practiced fully on Friday. Poole, who has a history of migraines and concussions, said that he was fine and will play Sunday. "I'm fine," said Poole, who did not suffer a concussion. "I just didn't look up in time and ran into his chest." Revis declined comment on the collision. * * * WR Braylon Edwards insisted that his critical comments of Mark Sanchez were taken out of context Thursday. Edwards and Jets spokesperson Bruce Speight maintained that he was speaking to quarterbacks in general, not Sanchez specifically, when he said, "Once a quarterback gets to a certain point, where his mistakes are far and few between … it's hard to be that (critical) when your mistakes are at a substantial level." * * * Backup quarterback Mark Brunell said his body language fine policy for Mark Sanchez was meant to be fun in nature. "Can I say no comment and not be fined?" Brunell said with a laugh.
SenorGato
Bryan Thomas 2.0. I too like what I've seen from Gholston this year. He's on the field quite a bit, and seems to have earned the trust of the coaching staff. The cool part is that he's actually around the ball...Next come plays...Seems like a nice week to notch that first sack.

We are so smart. And I hope Rex is right about old Gholston. Me thinks he just says these things to make him feel better about his overall suck. During games I will look for him and not see him anywhere. I agree that Rex is probably blowing smoke up the ghost's a$$ to inflate his ego. I mean, if everybody INCLUDING the coach calls you a bust, then you have even less motivation to earn your millions.
SenorGato
Ok fine... Bryan Thomas 0.045 Beta. Lol Has Gholston actually played on defensive downs (not ST) recently? Yep...I didn't even watch a ton of the Packers game and I saw him a few times. I was shocked too, but I've been noticing him on the field this year beyond that Favre juke. He's not embarrassing himself most of the time. I'll be as surprised as anyone when he actually does something, but I think that at this point in his career the numbers are on his side. There's just one that alludes him really, and that's the sack. Once that gets out of the way maybe he goes batsh*t crazy and starts showing signs of an NFL player. He's got 9 games and whatever playoff games they play. sh*t, I still hope he's next year's starter somewhere rather that not on the team.

Vudu
Yeah he has not worked hard at all his entire life. If you won the lotto you would pay it back right? if I sucked at my job the way Gholston sucks @ football, I'd get fired. Get real. So bnecause he worked hard all his life we should overlook the fact that he blows donkey balls at the craft he 'worked hard' at? The hell world do you live in? It's about results, noone cares how u got there. There are no brownie points for trying hard and FAILING, except the ones your Mommy gives u when you come in dead last to pacify your hurt feelings. Guest jNYC1
Gholston is fun to root for now that the pain of a wasted pick has subsided. Who cares how much money he's made...it's part of how f-ed things are in the NFL where rookies make more than veterans who've proven themselves! Blame the system but stop the Gholston hate. Bleedin Green
Am I crazy? I caught that too, that was some god awful writing there. Apparently all the author realized was that there was a position switch and now Gholston plays DE. Any actual knowledge of what he did previously in his college or NFL career was apparently irrelevant.

DMaynard
I love Rex, but this is getting ridiculous. Gholston is a complete and utter bust. He has no business being in the NFL. He is not a football player. Might make a good wrestler or bouncer, just can't play football. Does not have the instincts, the toughness or apparently the IQ to learn techniques. Hopefully the financial reality of next years cap situation and Jets payroll will force them to give up this hopeless dream and cut his a$$.
