Linebacker Bart Scott, a Detroit native, is one of many players on the Jets with Michigan ties.

DETROIT -- Rex Ryan said Friday the "hometown hero" can't be underestimated. With that in mind, he's decided to start Vernon Gholston, a Detroit native, in place of Mike DeVito for today's contest against Detroit, according to the official line-up changes.

The Jets shuffle their linemen and defensive personnel so often that it's not a major deal. But it's a motivational tactic by a coach known for doing so.

This will be Gholston's first start of the season and the fourth of his career.

There are several players with Michigan ties on the Jets' roster along with Gholston -- Bart Scott, Braylon Edwards, David Harris, and Calvin Pace -- so it's safe to assume they'll be among the game-day captain. For the past two weeks, Ryan has also included one of his assistants among the captains.

The Lions will start Amari Spievey at strong safety instead of C.C. Brown (knee)

Oh nice...insignificant, but nice.

Like Brian Schottenheimer? RimShot.gif

Thank you, thank you....

Thought it was interesting in a week where Rex seemed to be talking up Vernon more than usual. His press conference posted here seemed to be all about Vernon, and not much else.

can't hurt

this isn't baseball or hoops where the starters play 90% + of the game and it's very visible

if he is sucking, he goes to the bench, and not many folks will even notice

maybe it will spark him

a pass rush would be nice
