KINGDIRK
Football Outsiders - Midseason Myths and Realities. Myth: Mark Sanchez has taken a big step forward. Sanchez's completion percentage in 2009 was 53.8 percent. In 2010, it's 53.5 percent. He averaged 6.71 yards per attempt in 2009; this year, he's at 6.66 ypa. He's made a slight improvement in his sack rate, which has gone from 6.7 percent to 4.5 percent, but the only noticeable difference in Sanchez between 2009 and 2010 is his interception rate. After throwing an interception once every 18.2 attempts in 2009, Sanchez went five games and 147 attempts without throwing one this year. While Sanchez is undoubtedly being more careful with the ball, avoiding interceptions altogether is a total fluke that has required a chorus of dropped picks. Since then, he's thrown five picks on 107 attempts, on pace for one interception for every 21.4 pass attempts. He won't be able to avoid them altogether, but if he wants to show growth he needs to get that to about one pick for every 30 attempts over the second half. Greenranger
His completion percentage would be a lot higher if the receivers could catch. They've dropped more than 10 passes in the last two games alone.

Ah yes, the inherent flaw in analyzing stats... and not watching games. You want to see whether or not Sanchez has improved? Watch last years games, then watch this years. More specifically... watch last year's Saints and Bills games. Then watch the playoff run, and the game-winning drives from this year. He's gotten better... I don't care what the stats geeks drum up, he's gotten better.
AFJF
One big factor the article fails to mention is that two of the "interceptions" were passes the the receiver had in his grasp only to have it ripped out by a defeneder. Yeah, that's his fault.

Personally, I'd mention neither, and leave it at "Sanchez is taking better care of the ball".

Ummm what do we wash out the attempts in the first 5 games where he didn't throw one? It says 147 without one, so let's add that to the 107 attempts after that and divide by 5 and we get one interception per every 50.8 attempts for the first half of season. Sure, but if you want to micromanage INTs, then you need to look at some ridiculously bad throws where the DB just flat out dropped the ball.
slats
Second year starters often take a noticeable step backwards. Teams have a full year of film to study to defend these guys. There's more on their plates, and that usually leads to more mistakes. Guys like Brees and Eli Manning took a couple years to get their sh*t together. Fans watching Sanchez can see that he's playing better this year. Don't love the guy yet, but he's actually winning games for the team this year when last year they were either winning despite him, or losing because of him - at least until the stretch run. He's a streaky QB who plays with a lot of emotion, and I'd expect his streakiness to settle down as he matures. This is a very young QB who came into the league with very little college experience, and got thrown right into the fire in a big market team with high expectations. Overall, I'm pretty damn happy with where the guy is currently at. Not gonna say those int's vs. Green Bay were bad calls, but they never should've happened. Those are on his receivers. He's been very careful with the football this year, but that hasn't stopped him from making plays downfield - where usually that extra care will result in more timid play (as we saw in the opener). Personally, I'd mention neither, and leave it at "Sanchez is taking better care of the ball". No, no, no. Where Sanchez is concerned only dropped picks count, dropped passes are meaningless as they are Sanchez's fault as well. Also, "dropped picks" is going to be a new stat that is only going to be counted for Mark Sanchez and no other QB in the history of the world. No, you see that doesn't matter because of all the "near picks" or "dropped picks" he threw. No other QB throws nearly as many "near picks" as Sanchez. BroadwayJ667
The fact is the team is winning and he is the QB. So drop it. Stats lie. For the longest time Tom Brady never put up good stats. In fact he didn't put up sexy stats until he got moss and Welker. So I don't put much stock in stats. Rex says it, and I live by it. I wanna lead the league in wins. For the entire season, the Jets only have 13 dropped passes. http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/leaders.asp?range=AFC&type=receiving&rank=232&year= In fact lets do a little math. Sanchez has completed 136 of 254. Factor in the 13 drops from your half-assed stats plus Braylon's two drops, Shonn Greene's drop from the Ravens game and the Packers game, LT's drop from the Packer's game, and those two INTS which were complete crap, and Sanchez has a completion percentage of 61.4% and thats not even all of the drops. All while Cindy Bieber has a completion percentage of 63.6%. Edited November 12, 2010 by Greenranger
