Vudu
Report: Redskins sign McNabb to five-year extension Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 15, 2010, 3:30 PM EST Donovan McNabb has secured another financial apology. ESPN’s Michael Smith reports that the Redskins have signed McNabb to a five-year, $78 million extension with a reported $40 million guaranteed. Yep, the organization just doubled down on McNabb two weeks removed from benching him for Rex Grossman. As always, we’ll wait to see the contractual details before knowing the full story. The final years of the contract are likely meaningless, and we’ve often seen that “guaranteed” money is often anything but when you look closer. With that out of the way, this clearly a serious and stunning financial commitment from the Redskins. McNabb will surely be locked in Washington through the 2011 season at a minimum. McNabb is being paid like a superstar, but he hasn’t played like one in Washington. This contract is a bet that he’s going to improve his play drastically in Mike Shanahan’s offense because he’s been league average at best so far. We don’t have to wait long to evaluate Dan Snyder’s latest investment. Starting Monday night, McNabb gets to make the organization look smart for all their faith or foolish for sinking more money into a doomed partnership with Mike Shanahan. PatsFanTX
I wonder if their is a 2-minute drill opt-out clause in the contract?
THE ILK
Imagine how much he got if he was not cardiovascular challenged, knew the playbook, and could run the 2 minute drill.
JetsFanInDenver
There was a reason Shanahan was fired in Denver. He is lucky he had Elway playing for him at QB.
Boozer76
There was a reason Shanahan was fired in Denver. He is lucky he had Elway playing for him at QB. I'm pretty sure the reason he was fired was his late season collapse in his last season in DEN, but from what I recall it was his demand that they get rid of Brandon Marshall. I remember at the time reports that Shanny basically gave them a "him or me" ultimatum and he lost.
jason423
Seems crazy, but my guess is most of that total is not really guaranteed. The money is in line with Brady and Brady only received true guarantees on about 40% of the reported guarantee. McNabb should get even less than that. They can pay him up to 12 million in base salary this year of which about 9.3M could be new money. So if we assume his real guarantee is only 22 million the Skins can get 9.3M cap free and probably more if they use their player control signing bonus structure as they usually do. So its just a guess, but this is most likely a 2 year deal where McNabb sees around 30M and will then be gone. Its done to pacify a guy who is the most insecure good QB that the NFL has ever seen and to make him stop complaining behind the scenes about a new deal. The Crusher
Local radio is going bonkers. The one argument that makes sense is... What the hell else is the solution? They want to be competitive now. They are losing their great fan base between a crappy team and crazy stadium expense. If they let him walk they have to look for another Vet and lose at least a year before he is ok with the system. If they go rookie they will not be ready for at least three years. At least now they got a QB and could focus on keeping draft picks and fix that horrible O line. The money may be high but not many good options. I remember at the time reports that Shanny basically gave them a "him or me" ultimatum and he lost. More often than not Denver always had a late season collapse. He was hired all this time b/c of those 2 Super Bowls he won with John Elway. After that they did not have much too show!
