In a bizarre answer, Suggs compared the Patriots to the 2000 movie "Bring It On," in which a cheerleading squad from Rancho Carne High School in San Diego steals routines from a hip-hop squad from East Compton, according to IMBD. Pyper
The sad thing is that the footage was never used "to cheat". BB discovered a very clever way to use the footage in order to predict the tendencies of opposing coaches audibles. It was all about deciphering which audibles opposing coaches would call and in what situations. As the commissioner acknowledged, it really was utilized for "advanced scouting" purposes. The problem is that the manner in which it was used is far to complex to be communicated on television or even be understood by an American public who's average IQ score doesn't even top three digits. Complexity is not something easily that's easily transmitted through media. That's why every media message is reduced to its simplest (and most shallow) level. So yeah, BB broke a rule. Not a rule that was highlighted in bold letters but rather one that was part of a ten page document consisting of logistical issues dealing with stadium parking and food concessions. Spygate was an overblown misunderstood media creation that was used to or try to bring down a man who is known to be an "enemy" of media. Why is he an enemy of media? B/c he (correctly) believes that the best way to ensure success on the field is to limit distractions for his players and keep them focused on the game they play whereas the media cares far more about off field controvercies and soap opera drama than they do about the actual game. As a fan, what do you care about? Do you like reading articles about Brett Favre, TO, and all the other divas seeking media attention or do you just want to read an intelligent analysis about the actual game of football? If it's the latter, then you need to realize that Belichick fights for your cause. His enemy is in fact your enemy. Stop allowing yourself to be manipulated by stupidity. But, alas, we are a stupid people and therefore being manipulated by stupidity is an unavoidable certainty......Unfortunately. It's the same way with politics. The complexity of the offense does not dictate the severity. The injustice perpetrated on the opposing teams does. Thanks Greenie, I thought for sure I would be attacked for my view. I mostly agree with what you said but I don't think enough fans recognize "the culture of the NFL". Competitive gamesmanship in this sport goes back further than the forward pass. Was it a coincidence that opposing team radios malfunctioned in the beginning of every big game while Bill Walsh made sure to script the first 20 plays for his offense? Parcells used to open up the tunnels to allow the wind to play tricks while opposing kickers attempted FG's. There are rules about talking to players under contract but its common knowledge that it happens all the time. There are rules governing the injury report yet every coach in the league stretches those rules from time to time in situations where supplying the correct info would put their team in a competitive disadvantage. So yes there are rules but the culture of the NFL for decades has been to know the "important" rules and know when to stretch the "trivial" rules. Belichick rationalized that b/c he wasn't using the footage in the manner specifically prohibited by rule, and in fact had come up with a creative new use for the footage.....That he was, at worst, guilty of a minor transgression. Belichick's fatal flaw was in underestimating the power of his enemy......The media. In reality, the media isn't really his enemy as much as its the other way around. In any case, he underestimated the hoopla his transgression would cause. It's a shame b/c this misperception of the masses really has tarnished the hard fought/hard earned accomplishments that he, his coaches, and all his players have achieved. That was a special team and to be denied of that in the minds of so many is truly, truly sad. At the end of the day, regardless of how he used the footage, he's got nobody to blame but himself. I believe the only way he can repair this damage is to win more Super Bowls. If he never wins another Super Bowl, in the minds of many, a dark cloud will hang over all his previous accomplishments. If he can repeat his previous success again, he proves that spygate was a whole lot of nonsense about nothing.
