Short FA wish list:

Athyba Rubin - Browns NT. They can have Harris if we can have this guy. I don't believe we have anything close to a shot at signing Ngata...Don't see him leaving Baltimore, but if he does I hope it's for Haynesworth money...Best DL in the NFL.

Gate Watson - If the Rubin thing didn't work out...Still, he's not as good as Rubin is...more of a new Pouha than a new Jenkins.

Manny Lawson - Probably the best 3-4 OLB in coverage in the NFL...If not, he's got the skills to be. Has some similarities to Pace...young vet...showed nothing early...got better over the years...now he's a damn good player who can start for a bunch of different teams. Waaaaay more likely than Woodley, who the Steelers are not going to let go (unless they do...in which case...pounce).

Brandon Mebane - Highly active NT...Played in a 4-3 in Seattle, but plays hard, with great leverage, and is exceptionally strong. Underrated...still not my favorite guy to sign.

Brian Robison - Good player for the Vikings...could possibly make the transition to DE/OLB...they kinda use him as a LB at times.

Mathias K - Only reason I would take Lawson over him is health. Very good player with experience as a DE and a LB.

Really the best case scenario would be to sign Edwards/Holmes/Cromartie, pick up the comp pick for Harris, and sign Lawson and Rubin...IMO...There's many ways to go about this, but that would make this team younger, faster, stronger, and more talent on the DL and at OLB...OLB being a position that I like seeing filled by veterans because it's such a complicated position in this D...DL because it's a pretty big need.

I didn't even talk about Richard Seymour...Been in this league 10 years and he's only 31...I've wanted this guy on this team since we moved into the 3-4. HOF caliber player...the best 3-4 DE of his generation, and the prototype for the position...Seymour would be absolutely amazing for this D.

we shouldnt even talk about signing new FA yet.

priorities for this team are to resign: Edwards, Holmes, Harris, Cromartie.

but we desperately need to draft a pass rushing OLB who possesses other superpowers besides invisibility. and I hope Rex can persuade some more ravens to jump ship after this season, imagine haloti ngata on this defense..wow..

I think getting the pass rushing OLB before grabbing a young big man is putting the cart before the horse. LBers in this D move freely because of what the DL does...

We can only wish this is the way the rest of the NFL views free agency, because if so, we should be able to keep all of Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie at some pretty cheap rates, considering none of them are considered amongst the top free agents available.

In all seriousness though, the toughest part for the Jets is between those guys and Harris, every single one of them is playing at a level that makes them completely deserving of a new contract. I think the hope for the Jets and fans was this would just sort itself out over the course of the season, but every last one of these guys is playing at such a high level right now, it's tough to not want to keep every last one of them.

The money offered to the players is what will sort this out.

If they are offered monster contracts they will be gone. If for some reason their value is down. Holmes one more pot bust year suspension. Edwards could be looking at a short stint in the county jail in Cleveland for probation violation. Then they will remain Jets.

I think Harris market value is going to be very high

After watching much of the awful cornerback play in the league this year it's going to be a near-impossibility that some team doesn't offer Cromartie a boatload of cash this off-season. Wilson better get ready for prime time quick. Personally, I'd rather spend the bucks on David Harris anyway. The one guy off that list that I'd love (that's feasible) is Seymour. Guy is a freak and would love to bang heads vs. New England twice a year.

There's a whole lot of guys in there who play a ton of snaps for the Jets, even the backups, so this will certainly be interesting. I think a lot of the backups will be locked up pretty quick. Guys like Coleman and Ihedigbo are quality special teamers and rotational guys and nothing more, for the Jets or any other team, so I don't see any issue retaining them. I will pay the Jets to not re-sign Eric Smith. Pool will probably stay at least until they figure what they're doing at safety. Hunter I'm sure they'll keep, as he's been in the league a while and I think settled into his role as backup, but it'll be interesting to see if Turner looks to get a shot to start somewhere. The guy is versatile and has quite played well for the Jets at time. As long as he's ok being a backup, I'm sure he stays. I'm sure both the kickers stay as well, unless Folk has some more bad games. Weatherford is having a great year, and with the Jets history of issues with punters, you don't let him go.

Brad Smith could be interesting, because I think there's definitely a question mark out there of how much this guy is really worth. He's still nothing more than a #4 WR, but is an extremely versatile player and a top special teamer. The Jets would surely love to keep him, but I think there could VERY easily be another team out there willing to offer Smith more than the Jets ever would, which could easily cause the end of his time here.

Richardson is almost guaranteed to retire and Clemens is a goner, so that leaves a bunch of guys who are your current starters in question. Ellis is going to come down to a matter how much he wants. He's been a solid starter for the Jets for a very long time, but he's growing long in the tooth and doesn't have a long term future. Ellis might be looking for one last payday, which he could possibly get on the open target for a DL needy team and if that happens, he's gone. That leaves the Jets with their remaining big four. I honestly think Braylon is the first guy who stays. Here's a guy who clearly wants to be here, and can't stop talking about how much happier he is as a Jet than he was in Cleveland. I think he'll be the first guy looking to talk extension and by far the most likely to be willing to give a discount. Harris is going to be tough, and I think it will again come to another team valuing him more than the Jets. The Jets clearly love the guy, but he shares the middle with another ILB who's getting paid a lot on a big contract and how much money are they willing to shell out at that position? As great as he is, he could make a much bigger name for himself, and thus a lot more money, as the center piece of a different defense.

Holmes, with the way I think he's been playing, is the guy the Jets will break the bank for. Ryan believes he can do anything on defense with anyone, but he's got a young QB on offense who is finally getting his crap together. I think Mikey T's priority becomes keeping his QB's weapons in place. Which leaves Cromartie, who I think will be toughest to replace, but if the Jets can lock up the WRs, he also becomes the most likely franchise tag candidate. With the year he's having, Cromartie is going to have some team out there easily willing to offer him $8 - 10 million a year, and with the contract Revis has, the Jets can't do it.

God that was a long run-on post... my bad. Bottom line, I think the Jets are going to keep the easy to retain quality backups and those guys they find hardest to replace. As much as we may like them, things are not looking good for the Ellises and Harrises of the Jets world.

Everything depends on what happens with the CBA. Will there be a Salary Cap or not, if there is one will it be more less or the same as it was before.

I think not only won't we re-sign Harris, but we find a better one in the draft.

I think the same thing. Then sometimes I think about the boar hunter in the 3rd round and I think that maybe it's not quite that easy. I think Mike T is pretty good at getting the team together so that he doesn't need to burn a draft pick on need.

...3rd or 4th. Like Harris, a guy who's stock will fall because he had a knee injury in college. Unlike Harris, I don't think he's going to come up with beast workouts that will push him to late first-early 2nd status.
