Rex Ryan says the Jets built specifically to beat the Patriots

According to Jane McManus of ESPNNewYork.com, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan added players last April specifically with beating the Patriots in mind.

Given the fact that the Jets play the Patriots twice a year -- at least -- Ryan wanted an additional cornerback specifically for the matchup with their AFC East rival.

"Specifically I felt we needed to get another corner to match up with New England," Ryan said. "So we drafted Kyle Wilson also and that was to try to beat New England and Indianapolis and whoever else got in our way.

"We tried to build our team to win a Super Bowl and we thought to win a Super Bowl you have to beat New England. We'll see if that blueprint works or not. We beat them once already."

For the first time since the Brady era started I honestly feel we match up well against the pats, when you get that it usually hols up for a few years for whatever reason. like how the pats always beat the steelers or how the chargers handle the colts.

I like this. If we win Monday you could be one of my new favorite posters. We have beat them readily since Rex has taken over. I see a glimmer of hope. No way we lose by any more than a field goal.

They unfortunately forgot to pick up cover safties as well. I guess they tried though so...A for effort?

I honestly think the Jets thought they had this in Pool. And maybe they do. Its no mystery that this defense is not easy to pick up and apparently its very difficult for safeties. I'm still hoping he's just hit a learning curve in the system.

He did make a TD saving pass deflection against the Bengals, but that was also because Palmer threw a Pennington type balloon over the middle to TO

2 out of 3, while a majority sure, doesn't quite become "regularly". Beat them again and we can start to talk about regularly.

I'm not sure how a team is "built" to beat the Pats without a pass rush. The Giants showed the blue print for beating the Pats* in the Super Bowl and they did it without 2 world-class CB's. You need to knock Brady on his a$$, early, and often.

For all of the talk of Brady's excellence he is not that great when he's getting hit.

Looking back to our loss to them last year, it was really only Sanchez that played badly in that game. His 4 INTS and 8 compilations cost us. We lost by 17, but one of those pick went back for a TD and the other three gave them the ball at their own 48 (FG) and 26 (punt) and our 25 (TD).

The Jets built a defense to defend the Pats of 2007 - 2009, a team with a vertical passing attack. Suddenly the Pats are again the 2001 - 2006 offense.

Lets see how it works out Monday.

IMO, this D can handle either. That's why Rex drafted Wilson, to handle guys like Welker. He has been slow progressing but is getting better. Against the Cheats, Revis most likely will handle Welker and other adjustments likely will be made to address the short passing game. What we do need is to get more pressure on Cindy.

As you said, we will see Monday. I don't think the Cheats will have a cakewalk like they did against the Lions.
