Russia gets the 2018 bid, and Qatar gets 2022 over the United States.

FIFA is a joke sometimes. Seems like they wanted the most dangerous place and it being about not soccer.

ZURICH -- Qatar was selected as host of the 2022 World Cup, beating out a bid by the United States to bring soccer's showcase back to America for the first time since 1994.

FIFA's executive committee choose Qatar over the U.S., Australia, Japan and South Korea in a secret vote Thursday.

Minutes earlier, Russia was announced as host of the 2018 tournament. It was chosen over England and joint bids by Spain-Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium.

Russia won despite the absence of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Zurich. At the last minute, he declined to make a final pitch for his country.

Be pissed all you want, but the stadiums that Qatar is going to put out are probably going to be pretty ridiculous.

They have to be. It's 130 degrees there in the summer. Almost unplayable conditions.

This whole thing reeks of bribes though.

Who the hell is going to make the trip to Qatar? How are they going to air-condition the long walks to the stadiums? 60 % of their country lives in one city; most World Cups are hosted by about 10 cities. This makes zero sense.

Lots of pretty buildings with no one in them. That's all Qatar is. Soccer is meant to be played outdoors, and that won't happen there. Great idea putting the World Cup in a giant desert. F*** FIFA.

LOL! Qatar and FIFA. A match made in heaven.

Let this be a lesson; even in the 21st century bribery and hookers work as a marketing plan. FIFA's penicillin budget and off shore bank accounts are both much bigger today.

Though should be fun trying to get to games in Russia without having to pay off half a city. And will be interesting when Western fans descend on Doha and expecting to tip a jar or 7.
