Five student-athletes on The Ohio State University football team have been suspended for NCAA violations, the school said Thursday in a press release.

Mike Adams, Dan Herron, DeVier Posey, Terrelle Pryor (pictured above) and Solomon Thomas will miss the first five games of the 2011 season and must repay money and benefits, the school said.

A sixth player, Jordan Whiting, must sit out the first game, the NCAA determined.

“These are significant penalties based on findings and information provided by the university,” said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs.

This is stupid.

I am not in favor of paying kids a stipend largely because I have two kids in college right now and the cost is ridculous. Student athletes are getting paid. Whether they maximize that pay is their problem.

Where it is ridculous, as ESPN has been banging all week, the SWAG bags kids earn at bowls are legal, but a kid selling crap given to him by the school or whatever is not.

The NCAA is stupid.

Im with you.

On top of that, the NCAA prohibits D1 athletes from holding jobs to make money. In the instance of Terrelle Pryor...His family needed the money so bad that his mom has moved into his OSU Dorm/Apt with him. No, no other student at Ohio State could get the gear that Pryor sold, but he and his teammates EARNED that gear. It was given to them, not to be returned. IMO that should be considered THEIR property, and they should have the right to do what they wish with it.

But they give Scholarships to these guys from the poorest of neighborhoods BECAUSE THEY PLAY FOOTBALL. Then they expect these athletes to put their interest in school over football? Is that not counter-intuitive.
