pfilippone
Forgive me if this has already been posted. But this article and especially the response by Cult Hero (below) is exactly how I'm feeling about the Jets this year. Are Jets fans inherently pessimistic and miserable? Personally, I can’t figure out what the problem is. I think it’s all the armchair coaches and QBs out there. When I saw our schedule for this year I said that I would be happy with double digit wins and a playoff appearance. Despite Rex claiming Super Bowl (he’ll do it every year until he reaches the point of being mathematically eliminated), I felt like we had plenty of luck on our side last year to make it as far as we did and, unfortunately, getting to the AFC championship REALLY blew people’s expectations through the roof. I think things would be different if the Patriots were struggling this year as well. Winning the AFC East was on everyone’s mind. So that’s a point of frustration too. (Shocking that a future hall of fame coach and future hall of fame QB aren’t struggling like a 2nd year coach and a 2nd year QB who had virtually no college experience.) Rex takes a lot of pride in his defense and talks them up a lot though so when they fail in a manner than can only be described as EPIC (Bears and Pats) it really raises blood pressure. With all that said, it’s the MADDENING inconsistency that’s driving people mad more than anything else. Take the Bears game for instance. Where was the D that held the Packers to 9 and completely shut down Miami a couple weeks ago? Of course, in that Miami game, we were wondering if our offensive starters even made it to the game. (No one showed up to the Pats game, for all its hype.) When half the team shows up, we struggle. When the entire team shows up and plays the whole game, we can beat anyone–like the Pats and the Steelers at home. People criticizing this team this year are ridiculous though. The Saints are going to be a wild card team (despite last night’s win) short of a miracle and they’re the defending Super Bowl teams. Look at others making the playoffs: The Bears: Are they anymore suspect or prone to struggle than we are? Look what their vaunted defense did on Sunday. It was about as bad as ours. The Rams or Seahawks: For real? The Steelers and the Ravens: You’re gonna tell me the Ravens offensive struggles don’t mirror ours? And the Steelers? If we’re “pretenders” then so are they. The Chiefs: Look at their schedule. It’s a joke. This is a team that got completely blown away by the Broncos. (Although I am in no way implying this is going to be an easy game come playoff time, I’m just saying compare their schedule to ours. I’d love to have gotten to pad my schedule with NFC West cream puffs.) The Colts: We’ve locked up a spot in the playoffs already. Have they? Oh yes, and how would we like to be the Giants right now? Eli Manning is STILL the most overrated QB in the NFL and even at this stage in the game is about as consistent as a year 2 Mark Sanchez. What about the hype machine teams that totally failed this year: The 49ers, The Chargers, The Vikings and The Cowboys? Really, I think most fans are just pissed off that the Patriots won the AFC East and are looking so good (so good, in fact, that Matt Flynn almost beat them) and that many of the disheartened are already anointing them Super Bowl Champions. If I had to guess, that’s the root of the frustration. Nothing mattered but unseating the Pats to most people. Well, it didn’t happen but dammit, we’re in the playoffs! We won 10 games! If Schotty keeps doing what he’s doing RIGHT NOW, Rex continues to grow as a coach, Sanchez continues to improve and we draft or trade to fix our depth issues at safety and a complete lack of a real pass rusher we’ll be the team to beat next year. We have holes, sure… but who doesn’t? Unfortunately, in the minds of the impatient and cranky, we will be the “Same Old Jets” till we win a Super Bowl. Well, suck it pessimists. Jetscode1
I think the OP "Payday" and the response from "cult hero" are missing a little perspective when he calls us "the most negative fan base in the NFL"...most NFL teams with recent playoff runs have fans with a case of expectation overload and many fans call in with similar complaints when their coach and/or their players fail to meet their expectations. The Dallas fans that surround me suffer from the same disease and are just as rabid with their criticisms. Chalk it up to the old idiom of the fans wearing their emotions on their sleeves. In many cases its more than a sleeve with all the cash doled out for tickets and jerseys. As far as our team, I agree with the observation that the "Jets are a good team. Not a great team, not an elite team." All of Rex's hyperbole does not change that fact. I too wish Rex would tone it down a bit but maybe whether its his personality, our team history, or just the nature of the entertainment industry in New York I don't expect Rex to tone it down any time soon. To the fans who get caught up in that...they need to trust their eyes a little more. Still, I like the direction and the accomplishments of the team since the Mangini regime ended. We have a second year head coach along with a second year QB who have more flashes of brilliance than occassional embarassments. We have a solid offensive line, some talent at the skill positions yet we have not played consistently. On the defensive side we've seen solid play from some unheralded defensive lineman yet we consistently struggle to make the crucial stop. Still think we are missing another "defensive star." A playmaker along the lines of Palomou, Reed, Matthews or Suh to help us grow into that consistently elite team. IMO, we are further along in the process than we have been in many a season but we need another star to reach that next level. Enjoy the ride. Hopeflly, we'll get there. Part of me thinks Rex was hired to re-define the term SOJ...since he was hired Rex tends to make reference to the term in a new light...if you noticed the presser after the Steeler game...he said something to the effect..."the SOJ came to Pittsburgh to get a win"...even though its our first win there ever...its almost like his word choice served a purpose...directed to the fans or his team I'm not sure...Woody and Mr. T had to know what they were getting hiring one of Buddy's sons...maybe he can change the culture or expectation level. The fact of the matter is that the Jets are not one of the worst teams in the NFL but they have failed to win a championship for over 40 years. Until the Jets win a championship the frustration from years of coming up short and losing does not go away. It is great that the Jets are once again the playoffs, maybe this year will be different. Nothing will change that. I like our HC and I like playoff births. It gives you the ultimate shot, just wish we didnt choke down the stretch again. I like the direction we are headed and agree that a couple of real players could change they dynamic of this team. There's enough to be excited about and its got nothing to do with what Rex Ryan says. Every teams goal is to lead the league in wins and win the Super Bowl. Dont get why people get bent out of shape because he's not afraid to say it to the media. Either way, I want him around to captain the ship because I feel like he's steering us right. rowonejetfan
Jet fans might be overly optimistic. Well for Jet fans. There was a lot of new season ticket holders last year as many bailed early cause of PSLs and we made play-offs. This season lots of new people bought season ticket holders and we make play-offs. These new people if we ever have another Kotite experience or go back to the days where Jets fans have brown paper bags on head and for fun set stadium on fire during games will have a heart attack. I have been going to Jet games on an off for 30 years, but only somewhat recently have season tickets in my name. I have never felt the pain of sitting on worthless tickets for years at a time. The opposite I used to go to games for bargains for many years. Lets hope we stay good and SOJ becomes a memory. No Frustrated ? Yup Why am I frustrated ? Because it seems like every week despite all the talent something is breaking down. One week the offense sucks and the defense and special teams are great. Another week the offense is good but the defense can't stop anybody. Look at the games they have lost this year Ravens 10-9 (Offense awful) Packers 9-0 (Offense shutout) Dolphins 10-6 (Offense awful again) Bears 38-34 (Defense collapses in the 3rd qtr) Right there four losses by a total of 18 points You look at some of their wins Miami 31-23 Defense make Henne look like Marino in the second half Houston (Defense collpases in the second half, Sanchez bails them out.) That is what is the most frustrating thing about this season. Alot of us have been waiting for this team to put it all together. It looked like they had turned a corner against Pittsburgh, but they fall right back into that inconsistant model the next week against the Bears. If the Jets play like the way alot of us think they can they should destroy KC go into New England for the divisional playoffs and give the Pats a heck of a game. So the million dollar question is ? Will they put it together. Will they give us that game where the offense, Defense and Special Teams are all on top of their game. If they are then the Jets will go a long way. If something breaks down then it is going to be short post-season and we are going to be sitting here wondering what the hell happened.
BP
As far as the playoffs, the Giants won the super bowl in '07 after looking like crap and losing 2 of their last 3. The Saints lost their last 3 games last year and the Steelers were smacked around by the Titans at the end of the year before. It didn't stop those teams from performing in the playoffs. They are a good team. If they want to be a great one they will have to go on a run. Losing to the Pats took the aura out of them, they are going to have to take it back. Why? because all of the SAME PROBLEMS that have been going on all year havent been fixed. what makes you think all of a sudden the Jets will figure out how to manage a game smartly? most playoff games are close. the Jets game management has not been all that impressive all year. Last year was different? Why? Because they beat the Bengals and Colts at the end? That flop against Atlanta was WAY worse than the performance in Chicago. They had to win that last game to get in. they won it and earned a playoff spot. this year they lose 3 out of 4 and earn a playoff spot because they had an easy schedule early in the season. I don't get why you are so against Rex talking tough. Your boy Parcells did it and he flopped at the end of the year plenty. Dallas '06 lost 3 of last 4; 05 lost 4 of last 6; '04 lost 3 of last 4, but they sucked that year. '03 lost 3 of last 5; 97 with the Jets he lost 3 of the last 4 with the playoffs on the line. When BP called Terry Glenn she or hit Chrebet with his crutch it was a motivating tactic. When Rex talks up his team OR calls them out you call him buffoon. Parcells was shot after he left the Jets. he wasnt the same guy in Dallas. I dont know where you come up with this sh*t from. Parcells NEVER EVER said ''I'll be better prepared than coach c'' at a press conference. he never ever disrespected the opposition. Rex does that all the time! how does that not motivate the opposition more? He took a poke at Bradys wife before that monday night game, and look at how Brady played..lol when the Jets got off the plane in Denver in jan 1999 all the players were saying ''coach doesnt want us saying anything''. How did the 98 Jets do at the end of the season? they had a meaningless game against the Patriots to end the season. they had already locked up the number 2 seed and had a bye. he didnt rest anybody! he played everybody and they ******* crushed the Patriots! it was awesome! lets see how this pre season game against the Bills goes this weekend. ZachEY
We're in the playoffs, what's up with the pessimism? How about we are 10-5 in our last 15????? I love it! Performance means nothing. Only record.
ZachEY
Also, he said the foot thing last week wasnt a distraction and that he would be better prepared than lovie smith. that was the worst defensive performance all year! On the flip side, you really think it was preparedness that made us unable to get near cutler, or our DBs stay with their WRs? Maybe, just maybe, we got beat. Sometimes that's all there is too it. ZachEY
I've been reading jackass "articles" and posts like this for over twenty years. "How daaaaaaaare you Jets fans be pessimistic? Joe Walton just gave you ten wins...Bruce Coslet is bringing Boomer in...Rich Kotite was a contender in Philly....Herm Edwards made the playoffs three times already..." To this, I always reply, "GFY." Jets fans with 20+ years of getting their cocks punched by this godforsaken franchise have every right to be skeptical. Until they win a Super Bowl, I don't have to kiss anyone's a$$ or "get behind" yet another charlatan head coach who instantly becomes Lombardi because he got his team to play .500 football. Call me a pessimist all you want, but I've got history on my side. Even this doesn't matter to me. History is irrelevant. This year, this very year, we have gotten some close call wins, beat the Pats early, but then got shelled by them later, we've been exposed on defense as we can't generate any passrush to protect our DBs, but on the other hand actually look like we're starting to maybe put something together on offense. Joe Walton, Bruce Coslet, Pete Carroll, Al Groh, Dick Kottite, Ken O'Brien, Mark Gastineau all have nothing to do with that. Rex's foot fetish has nothing to do with it, nor do his predictions for the season. We're simply a team that has done enough to win against some meager opponents, pulled out a decent game against the Steelers, and couldn't stop the Bears. At this point, we've done enough to make the playoffs and our record is as irrelevant as our history. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but for the 'anything' we want to happen to actually come to fruition, a lot of things this team has shown not to be capable of has to start happening. Like, maybe, playing good football on both sides of the ball for 60 minutes. We saw it against Buffalo and no one else. So, call me a pessimist all you want, but I've got the reality of in game performance on my side. That reality is, we're an above average team who struggles mightily at times, and we've got significantly better teams in our way of reaching our goal. #27TheDominator
Why? because all of the SAME PROBLEMS that have been going on all year havent been fixed. what makes you think all of a sudden the Jets will figure out how to manage a game smartly? most playoff games are close. the Jets game management has not been all that impressive all year. I'm not saying they will. I'm saying that it's not just being a blind homer to think the Jets could go on a run. Those teams went on runs and their fan bases were saying the same things you are. Their fan bases were wrong. There were another ten teams whose fan bases were saying the same things that were right. We'll see what happens. They managed the games smartly enough. The Bears game was bad, but the other games they lost were all on Sanchez not showing up. For all the jibber jabber about clock management and game management, they did the job. Against good teams and bad. They had to win that last game to get in. they won it and earned a playoff spot. this year they lose 3 out of 4 and earn a playoff spot because they had an easy schedule early in the season. Easy schedule? Like playing the Pats and Bears to start the year? You'd feel better about the team if they needed to win Sunday and kicked the crap out of the Bills? That makes no sense to me. If you think Parcells was shot after the Jets that changes things, but what the team said when they got off the bus is ******* MEANINGLESS. Did they show up and play? Sure for a half. Or was it Parcells shrewd no talking policy that kept the Broncos from playing hard? Does Rex coach a team that shows up to play? In 2010 they have played their balls off in 14 out of 15 games. I don't care if the coach is a buffoon. I don't give a flying **** if the other team is motivated. There is no such thing. They are better or they aren't. For every player that plays better because of bulletin board material there is one that presses and plays worse. The other team isn't fielding 53Reggie Jacksons. If the Jets crush the Bills or get crushed by the Bills doesn't mean sh*t to any of us. It's what they do in KC that matters.
Aten
I don't see how a fan base that hopes against hope and revels in silver linings like Jets fans do could possibly be characterized as either pessimistic or miserable.
Boozer76
We are exactly what we are.....A dangerous team that is capable of going to and winning the superbowl if all facets of the team play as well as they are capable of playing. Not once this season has the team played as a whole unit from start to finish. Either the O has crapped the bed while the D plays great, the D craps the bed when the O plays great, SpT's craps the bed at times as well, and even the coaches have crapped the bed at key moments. We are a 2nd year coach with a 2nd year QB that currently is 21-13. To be honest, that's the big picture here and so far that's pretty damn good if you ask me. Did Rex set the bar extremely high with his talk? Of course he did. Is it bad to have a coach who expects to win the SB every year? That is the goal isn't it? He talks alot, and sometimes I wish he'd shut his mouth as well even though I love him as a coach. The playoffs are approaching and we are in no matter what happens this week. If we put it all together we have as good a chance as any team to win the SB. And if we fail, we go into next season with a more seasoned QB and coach and will have an even better chance to reach the ultimate goal. Period.
