Bugg
One thing I had heard and had noticed; over the last 30 years, meat packers of hogs figure out they were losing market share to chicken. So they changed hogs' feed to close to or identical to what chickens are fed. The result is an animal that's flesh is almost the same color, texture and taste as mass-produced chicken. The pork is white rather than pink, and way lower in fat.And it's the case across the board, whether you get the cheaper brands like Armour or Hormel or small organic producers. I work with and know Veggie people and when I invite them to lunch, a business dinner, a social function or if they go to a wedding it is always big to do with them asking for special orders, special menu blah blah blah that I have to set up. I don't have any hangups about hunting; I figure if you are going to eat meat, you should have the guts to kill it and quarter it yourself. I definitely have a problem with all the chemicals and crap that is mass produced and put in the meat they sell us in the supermarket. You just might be eating something that has human dna in it. That's just plain fd up. If I did stop eating meat, I wouldn't be a vegan or anything like that. I like eggs and milk, but even that stuff has chemicals in it. You can't win. So if you came to my house for dinner it would be some kind of Italian dish.. I make my own sauce and its never been an issue.. most meat eaters eat Baked ziti.. lasagna.. ravioli etc.. so there you go lol When I go somewhere that I dont have menu control I will never make a fuss.. Yeah, when you get down to brass tacks, not eating meat on ethical grounds can get pretty complicated. I'm glad I'm not hung up like that. I got a friend who's a vegan and he won't even use butter. But I have to think twice about eating ham after watching stuff like this: Pigs scream just like humans. It's horrifying. Now chickens, I got no problem killing and eating a chicken. It's pretty much a stupid animal. But when it comes to buying a frozen one that was harvested in some place where they shoot them up full of steroids and stuff, then I got a problem with it. Thats what started me at first but then when you delve into how other animals are brutally killed and stuff it made me feel like a hypocrite.. so I gave up everything.. Odd thing-a lot of Italian restaurants and suppliers of "veal cutlet" in and around NYC actually slip in pork loin cutlets, which can be easier to get and cheaper. And they taste very much the same once you bread and fry them. Can't do it with veal chops to pork chops. But if you eat veal parm in the NY area often you have in fact consumed pork cutlet parm. Have for the last few months bought Allen chicken products rather than Perdue or store brands. They aren't nearly as big, but they are way lower in additives and chemcials, and price-wise not that big a jump.Plus they taste better. An 8-9-pound Perdue oven stuffer roaster, which is pretty far from "natural", is chock full of stuff you do not want to be eating. Seems the supermarkets around here cannot keep the Allen products in stock.
