The iPhone is finally coming to Verizon Wireless.

The largest U.S. wireless carrier will make the long-awaited announcement at an event Tuesday in New York City, people familiar with the matter said. The phone will make its way to Verizon Wireless stores around the end of January, a person familiar with the matter said.

The move will for the first time let U.S. consumers choose the network that carries their iPhone and perhaps give them additional

It will also upend the balance of power in the industry, ending Verizon rival AT&T Inc.'s exclusive hold on the device and leaving smaller players like Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA facing two well-capitalized competitors offering the world's most popular smartphone.

The Verizon phone will be similar to the iPhone 4 but run on the carrier's CDMA technology, people familiar with the matter have said.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc.

Apple has a track record of releasing phones between two and four weeks after it announces a new device. For example, the iPhone 4 was announced on June 7 this year and available in stores by June 24. The earlier versions of the phone, like the 3GS and the 3G followed a similar pattern.

Apple is moving to expand its carrier base in the U.S. at a time when it is facing increasing pressure from phones powered by rival Google Inc.'s operating system, called Android.

Android-based phones passed the iPhone in sales in the second quarter, according to research firm Gartner. The surge appeared to get to Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, who made a rare appearance on a conference call with analysts in October and criticized Android as fragmented, referring to the myriad ways the software appears on the many different phones that use it.

AT&T has had the iconic device to itself since its introduction in June 2007.

Would be disinclined to get the Iphone until my current "free" droid time has run out. And with every rollout, as I found with the Blackberry Storm, you are better off waiting for the 2nd generation when they have the kinks and bugs addressed.

Waited for this for a long time. Eventually went Droid, no turning back now.

I wasn't that overly anxious to get the iPhone anyway, but the second I got my Droid I officially moved on to not caring less about the iPhone. Which is exactly why Verizon is now getting the iPhone, because Apple is starting to get scared. Too little too late if you ask me. My phone can do everything it can and costs me a hell of a lot less.

YES. That's exactly how I feel.

We have moved on. I like not using itunes actually. Love how many apps are in the marketplace for the droid as well.

I'm in the same boat. I have the Droid Incredible and it does everything I want which I would look for in an iPhone. It even has a better camera. The one thing the Droid doesn't have is video conferencing, but I couldn't give 2 sh-ts about that.

When my contract is up I'm sticking with Droid/Android.

The best phone on any carrier is Android-based and not the iPhone now. AT&T has the Motorola Atrix, which looks insane (especially with the laptop/dock), Verizon has the Droid X/Bionic/2/Thunderbolt/LG whatever-that-phone-is, Sprint has the EVO 4g, T-Mobile has the Nexus S. All have the iPhone beat in terms of specs and potential, in my opinion.

I have heard a few people mention the Atrix, have to check that out.

The one Droid complaint I have is really a Verizon complaint. I wanted to upgrade to a newer Droid with the HDMI out. I was thinking it would be great for tailgating, stream the red zone channel. Except they don't let you do that, apparently you can only stream videos that you are watching on the droid. Hate when they do that...

What do you mean only videos you are watching on the Droid? Do you mean not like access to cable/satellite stuff or is it limited from what you have saved on your phone? (I ask out of curiosity not to refute you lol I don't know)

Not sure if you can stream videos that you have saved.

I referring to the mobile red zone channel. You can watch it on your phone but not through the HDMI out. Probably are work arounds. Just hate when they limit technology.

If you have an I-Phone, you're pretty much gay.

I will understand the love for the iPhone. It's a freaking cell phone! Apple fan boys love the thing and blamed AT&T for all the problems with it. Since Verizon already has the Droid do you think the iPhone is going to perform any better on their network?

Atrix looks sick but screw AT&T, I'm looking to get an Android phone, thinking about the Nexus S messed around with in the Best Buy and I liked it. Gingerbread OS is nice and there's internet rumors of the Nexus S running ice cream already. Anyone here have it? Whats your opinion?

Is that "Ice Cream" name even official? I don't think Google has even announced its plans with regards to Honeycomb (3.0) on non-tablets.

There's some new sort of Nexus S that might be coming out so watch out for that...Engadget seems to think that one will be running 2.4 if that's what you mean by Ice Cream, although I don't know what that adds over 2.3.

Yes, particularly in major cities. Verizon just opened up like 30 new 3G towers for the NYC area alone (30 meaning a lot, I don't know the number lol). They redesigned the antenna and added a fourth "hitch" on the iPhone, so the signal attenuation issues that plagued AT&T's version (which were not AT&T's fault) will be avoided. Android users on average consume more data than iPhone users, so I think Verizon knows what to expect.

I don't believe they confirmed the name to be ice cream yet, but i'm not that up to date on the android OS. I've been a long time iPhone user (2g) and I'm looking for a change so I've been reading up on what would be the best phone for the android experience. After Reading some forums, I think I'm just gonna hold out til summer and see what comes out on the android market, nexus s seems to be buggy according to user reviews.

I would avoid Samsung phones in general. While the screens are awesome, they never update their devices and the TouchWiz UI sucks. I would suggest HTC or Motorola, but I suppose the market will probably change drastically come summertime, what with the maturation of 4G and everything.

i celebrated verizon getting the iphone by getting a verizon android. this thing is awesome.

Good move. Consumer Reports came out and said that the iPhone on Verizon is a bad investment right now as Apple will be releasing a new one in the summer.

I'm up for an upgrade at AT&T (been with them since 2000 and have had no problems) Any recommendations for phones?

Beware of Verizon and its billing tactics. I upgraded 2 phones for my children 2 BlackBerrys. They put 1 phone on a corporate account charge of $44.99 a month. My wife picked it up after 2 months. We were credited and the corporate office said phone store employees do this to get the commision. By the time you notice it they have alrady been paid. So buyer BEWARE with Verizon.

I have always had bad experiences with Verizon hence I won't touch them. Their typical policy is to blame you or their employees, but most of the time it is corporate policy. People don't just decide to do things like that, they do it because they are told to. To claim otherwise is to be completely ignorant about how low level employees operate in any organization.

Verizon has their FIOS and it's generally gotten good reviews, but I can't trust them. Likewise with their wireless. The iphone was a yuppy phone anyway.
