Football Gods Punish Patriots Again

Recommended Posts

There are many reasons for New England's postseason woes: some specific to the Patriots, others generic to all football, one particular to a great performance by the Jets' defense. But Tuesday Morning Quarterback thinks this is the core reason: The football gods are not yet finished punishing Bill Belichick for Spygate.

An organization caught illegally taping their opponents, mocking opposing teams in press conferences, coached by a man who was a scumbag in his marriage... a team that was recently exposed both for employing the sideline wall technique and doing the jets' plane celebration... a team that uses and discards players with little regard for their lives as if they were walmart employees (Ted Johnson, )... coached by a man who runs of the field before the super bowl is even over, without shaking hands... a team that never hesitates to run up the score... that organization is classy, first rate, the model of professionalism.

said it in my prediction thread how I was listening to George Noory's Coast To Coast the other night and this numerologist lady said that the way the numbers added up the year 2011 would be a year in which those who ran their lives in shady manners would be exposed and pay a price.

Robert Kraft's BS about his team being classy last week reminded me of the following exchange between Rodney Dangerfield and Adrienne Barbeau in Back to School, guess which one is the Jets and which is the Pats:

Vanessa: You have NO class, Thornton, and I am TIRED of it! I want a divorce.

Thornton Melon: Divorce. I knew we had something in common.

Thornton Melon: [reaches in his coat and takes out papers] Here, sign these.

Vanessa: [scoffs] Oh! Oh, I'm afraid it's not gonna be that easy, honey. This is gonna cost you - PLENTY!

Thornton Melon: [chuckles and takes Polaroids out of his pocket] Oh, yeah? Vanessa, let's talk about class for a minute, alright? Here's you and Giorgio in the guest room. A little classy, isn't it? Here's you and Giorgio in the rumpus room. Another classy one, huh? Ooh, this one, I can't figure out. There's you, there's Giorgio... What's with the midget over here?

[Vanessa throws down the divorce papers and storms out]

Thornton Melon: Hey, wait! I've got more!

I found this to be a pretty good response from a Pats fans...pointing out the media bias regarding the Pats.

But instead of saying **** the Pats what people should be saying is **** the media, because it's the media that shapes the narrative and not the other way around. Remember, this is the same media that often downplays the accomplishments of Michael Vick, while supporting the accomplishments of Brett Favre. The same media that ignores scandals involving prominent white players, while exaggerating scandals involving prominent black players. The same media that over simplifies complex situations in order to make them fit into one of their easy-to-follow textbook storylines, because that's what gets the ratings rating.

As you pointed out rather clearly, the Patriots have done a lot of things over the years that would make a lot of NFL fans view the organization as arrogant or classless. The Chargers post-game celebration, refusing to shake hands and the SB walk off all come to mind.

But let's be reality, the Patriots hardly use the media to shape a classy image of themselves. In fact, they're coached to give the media as little as possible. They're instructed by Belichick to do the following:

- Don't believe the hype

- Manage expectations

- Ignore the noise

- Speak for yourself

In addition to this, earlier this year Brady quoted Belichick as saying "When you win, say little. When you lose, say less." This is why Brady is often (but not always) politically correct off the field while being fiery and talkative during the game. The players are instructed by the organization to say as little as possible about games and rivalries to the media not because they're trying to look classy but because they're trying to eliminate the hype surrounding the team because Belichick views it as a needless distraction.

The media ignorantly chalks this up to the Patriots just being a classy group of players, when in actual fact they're just trying to eliminate any and all potential distractions from the media by saying as little during their press conferences and media days as possible.

It's this misrepresentation, combined with the franchise's past successes and significantly large white player group that gives rise to some of the media bias the Patriots often receive. For instance, prior to the New Yorks Jets divisional game last Sunday, no one in the media wanted to talk about Brady's recent playoff record, or how the ten Patriots rookies would handle the playoff pressure or how a defense ranked 25th overall would hold up in such a big game, despite these being meaningful talking points, especially in the playoffs. After the game was over, Bart Scott, as much as I hate him, correctly pointed all of this out.

To recap, the class act narrative isn't something intentionally created or shaped by the New England Patriots - it's manufactured by the media as a result of their bias towards successful franchises with large numbers of white players who typically remain PC in public. So with that said, I tend to agree with you that the Pats are indeed a notable case of media bias, spin and misrepresentation. But you can't blame the organization for that - you need to point your fingers at the media outlets responsible for the bogus portrayal.

Tl;dr: Blame the media.

Wow Garby ran so major BS there about the media again, huh?

This is complete and utter horsesh*t. The asshead who wrote this obviously missed Bob Kraft's BS about his team being so classy last week.

Belichick lacks character. From his stealing a cool million from Leon Hess, to walking off the field before his 18-1 season was officially over. His inability to own up to the cheating, or to own up to the fake punt call in last Sunday's game. He's an arrogant little bitch.

He got lucky with Tom Brady, and owes his legacy to that luck.

That whole articele blows, and it's not just the Jersey/B references.

Never mind the fact that the Jets played their best game of the season. Never mind that the coverage was incredible, and Brady was sacked 5 times. Never mind the offense scored 4 touchdowns in 5 trips to the endzone. And never mind that the league-leading offense with 34 points a game (or whatever the stat is) was held to just one touchdown in the first 59:30 of the game.

According to the article, the Patriots are still being "punished" by the "football gods." This guy doesn't give the Jets any credit for beating the 14-2 Patriots in Foxborough, and he doesn't give them any chance to beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

I heard Marshall Faulk say the other day..."he hasnt been the same without his cliff notes".

Thought that was pretty funny.
