  1. 1. Do we all need new iPads?

    • Hell yes!
    • Don't we already have computers and/or smartphones?
    • Mac sucks, we need the (fill in the blank) instead.
    • Yeah, but I hear the iPad 3 is gonna blow this one away...

I still don't see the need for a tablet. It doesn't do anything unique over a smartphone except offering a higher resolution and costs as much as a laptop...

It does it bigger, and the wireless connection is cheap compared to a wireless card for a computer.

But please feel free to talk me out of it!

I'm thinking of holding out and getting the iPhone 5 in June - which would be three generations beyond the one I have now.

If you have a smartphone, just use mobile hotspot for the laptop. You can jailbreak an iPhone or get it for free from Android phones...

I've never seriously considered jailbreaking the iPhone, and I think I'd be inclined not to do it if I bought a brand new one in a couple months.

Should I?

Whats the purpose for the gadget? Do you really need it or is this just for the latest greatest? If you need something then of course, buy it, but if its just because its the newest version then it would just be a waste of your money after you get over the novelty of it being the latest gadget.

Dude, I still have a phone that only makes phone calls lol. Anything else I use my laptop for. I've never owned a Mac product, though my wife has one. I never owned an Ipod/phone/pad/computer. I must admit that I did want the Ipad when it first came out. But when I really thought about it, to spend $600 or more for something that doesnt do anything that I couldnt already do is just a waste of my $600. I'd rather just save the money.

sh*t, if we all at Jetnation saved up enough money maybe collectively we'd be as rich as Steve Jobs lol.

P.S. Yes, im trying to talk you out of it :D More important things to do with your hard earned money than to give it to Steve.

I appreciate that, I really do.

Thing is, I'm something of an internet addict, and they're coming down on internet usage at work. In fact, one employee I know was singled out for all his blogging on a site called JetNation.com...

I've been able to follow some things on my phone, but it isn't the same. My bosses wouldn't care if I was on the toy all day as long as I got my work done - they just don't want to hear anything back from Big Brother.

Then it seems like you've weighed your options. Im a bit of an addict too I must admit. I love the ability to just have information available to me. It feeds my brain better than college ever did and for once im able to control the info that I want and its not some "prerequisite" if you will.

I've become in the past 2 years a cheap skate lol. If I dont need it I dont buy it. Jetnation is one of my fav places, but im not dropping $600 just to read some off the wall sh*t from Villain_the_foe lol. :cheer:

Save your money man. You may be heavy into the net, but atleast you have access to it. If you didnt then I would say RUN AND BUY WHATEVER YOU NEED RIGHT NOW lol. But if you still have access then put that money to better use.

i refuse to support apple anymore till they support flash.. i'll buy the zoom to go with my android phone.. f them scumbags

I have to agree. Apple has the name, but I know of many different devices that are better than an Ipad/pod imo. I must say though that when it comes to computers they are pretty darn efficient, but I know how to wipe out a hard drive and reinstall windows so I dont mind saving a few hundred, getting a PC, download an anti virus and not frequent alot of porn sites so I dont get spammed to death lol.

If you would use jailbroken features, sure. (Mobile hotspot or otherwise)

I did so I could switch apps within another app, and so I could have the sysboardsettings on a swipe-across the top. Custom springboard/background is also nice, as are a couple of other apps. I'm on an OG iPod Touch, so I couldn't get iOS 4...so I jailbroke to get all the features anyways.

That's nice. but can you answer the phone while taking a shower or have your kid whip it across the yard to you when it rings. With out that... No deal.

Not completely true, check out the new garageband and imovie ipad apps announced today. There are plenty of great apps and great uses for the ipad. The screen real estate helps with things like reading books, and the ipad enhanced newspapers/magazines that are/will be coming out are pretty cool. They are getting robust enough for me to start considering leaving the laptop at home when traveling.

You can't read on an LCD for extended periods without going blind...trust me, this is coming from the guy that read War and Peace on his iPod and now wears glasses. The eye strain gets to you after like a half hour. There's nothing in garageband and imovie that can be done more completely on a laptop for the same price.

I mean, I guess it's a question of semantics/usage scenarios a bit. If you only need a computer for that stuff, it makes sense because it is so user-friendly. But that seems like such a niche group of users, yet it still sells which amazes me.

I don't doubt that you can make really cool music apps, etc. on the iPad with all that screen estate. Check out Jordan Rudess for example: (Granted he's a keyboard master...lol he's recording on his iPhone with one hand and playing with the other.)

I think I've just about talked myself out of getting one (before the iPad 3 comes out, anyway ). I'll upgrade my phone this summer, though, especially if the iPhone 5 has the same A5 chip as this iPad, and the same 1080/5MP camera. Biggest complaint about my ancient iPhone is the crappy camera.

But that Garageband for iPad looks awesome. Using the keypad -or even some midi controllers- can make it difficult to play their virtual instruments on the computer, but having that touchscreen drum set is very, very cool. I can see that being extremely user friendly.

Wife bought me one when they came out last year. Highly recommend. She suggested taking over mine and getting me a v2...

Is the screen cleanable? Say you get some chicken grease on it. Is it something you could clean or will it have that grease sheen forever like my genitals do?
