The quaran says to only kill the infidel if he oppresses you. A large portion of the book was written while they were at war with the pagans who were trying to keep their beliefs as the main religion in that area at the time. This is why those seemingly violent passages were written. It's easy to dismiss it all and say it's a violent religion, but it really depends on the interpretation. Same with the bible. There's tons of violent passages in there, but if you take the meaning of the whole over the meaning of one quote mined line, you better understand what it's actually about.
