I would go with the Envy 14 with a Radiance display right now, but of course they decided to get rid of that option. A Thinkpad T420 with an i5 2410, 14" 1600 x 900 (!) screen, 4gb ram (in 1 slot), 500 gb at 7200 rpm for $685. If that's still there in two days time, add something small like bluetooth to bump over $699, and I would get a free 360 with it. That's Microsoft's new student deal by the way, which in my opinion pwns Apple's. Although I have no need for a 360. I could keep it as a DVD player or sell it. Hmm... I might want a dedicated graphics card by like junior/senior year though. Decisions, decisions. EDIT: Lenovo's not a partner with the whole 360 thing. Bummer. Hell my new desktop is only 2 Gig DDR3 It works great & I'm using it to update the graphics on my website! Like I said, If you need it as a word processor & mid range development, it's a great find. RAM isn't what will bottleneck you when it comes to games. Your graphics card is what matters, and possibly the CPU. Bought it strictly to do Word Processing and look at the Web, and it does that pretty well. I was surprised how decently it handles movies off of Netflix. I actually have a Lenovo for work...a more powerful version but the price tag on that was al;most 4x this one. I do like Lenovo's a lot though. Many laptops have 2 slots for memory and are quite easy to get to without opening the guts of the box. A google on your particular machine will prob get you some easy instructions on doing this. Depending on the model you can probably pull up videos on how to add memory. Just unplug it and remove the battery before you do anything. Depending on the laptop there is either an easily accessible compartment under your laptop (usually 1 screw) or you may have to remove the keyboard (which is ridiculously easy but is a poor design for novice DIY'rs). For what I am using this for I don't think RAM will be an issue. The AMD chip will be an issue long before RAM...but that's what this price point gets. When I was the Director of IT at my company we switched to Lenovo and never had a problem. Now those were higher end units so it is possible that they may suck at the entry level price point. Ever since the Chinese bought IBM's PC business the quality has suffered. When IBM owned them ThinkPad's were the BEST laptops in the market. My work laptop is a Lenovo for the past 3 years. I've always been "late to the party" if you will when it comes to the latest gadgets. So im really digging the fact that laptops are so damn affordable given that laptops do everything that I need them to do. I guess I'll be picking up the Ipad 5 for like $100 when the new hologram gadgets take over the market and will be absolutely stoked about my purchase lol.
