Maxman
$390 at Best Buy. 15" screen. 320 gig Hard Drive, 3 gigs of RAM. It has an AMD processor (entry level) that's why it was so cheap. But $390 for a Lenovo laptop? Damn, can't beat that price....

war ensemble
I have to get a laptop soon for school. I think it's going to be between the Envy 14 and the Vaio SA (if they ever decide to launch that). I would go with the Envy 14 with a Radiance display right now, but of course they decided to get rid of that option. I'm holding out for something above 1366 x 768. 1600 x 900 on the SA would be nice. A non-uber-glossy screen would be cool too.
war ensemble
Slickdeals has a rather, uh, slick deal up on a Lenovo. A Thinkpad T420 with an i5 2410, 14" 1600 x 900 (!) screen, 4gb ram (in 1 slot), 500 gb at 7200 rpm for $685. If that's still there in two days time, add something small like bluetooth to bump over $699, and I would get a free 360 with it. That's Microsoft's new student deal by the way, which in my opinion pwns Apple's. Although I have no need for a 360. I could keep it as a DVD player or sell it. Hmm... I might want a dedicated graphics card by like junior/senior year though. Decisions, decisions. EDIT: Lenovo's not a partner with the whole 360 thing. Bummer. Honestly the only problem I saw was this entry level CPU and it being AMD with the way the cache things. But since it is dedicated to porn and JN I think I will be ok, lol. Hell my new desktop is only 2 Gig DDR3 It works great & I'm using it to update the graphics on my website! Like I said, If you need it as a word processor & mid range development, it's a great find. Especially for it being the latest IBM laptop.
villain_the_foe
A bit thin on memory and HD space, but not a bad deal at all. How much memory and space is normal for a laptop? 3 gigs and 350HD is pretty damn good for a home laptop imo. Unless you're playing high end games or something. I'd add more, it's usually pretty reasonable I have a samsung laptop with core 5 processor, 2 gigs of memory and a 400 gig hard drive running windows 7. I run games on it and have no hick-ups. I cant run all specs on ultra high, but standard to high. I can run high end games with an OS running in the background with 2 gigs of memory so I think Max is doing pretty damn good right now for $350. I paid $800 for this laptop last year and I've had more problems with the stupidity of the OS in general and a dead battery, but the memory is enough and the HD I cant seem to fill even with fully downloaded games. RAM isn't what will bottleneck you when it comes to games. Your graphics card is what matters, and possibly the CPU. Windows 7 is really resource intensive and RAM is super cheap, so it makes sense to upgrade that.

I really still can't believe that you can go into Best Buy, having done no research and walk out with any laptop for $350 or so. The price point just amazes me.... Bought it strictly to do Word Processing and look at the Web, and it does that pretty well. I was surprised how decently it handles movies off of Netflix. Naturally, the display isnt the best, and the case feels like it'd explode if I ever dropped it, but overall it's a good bargain.

It sounds appealing, but I want no part of opening this thing up and physically handling the guts. Adding memory for laptops is more like changing the RAM chips you have with larger ones. Many laptops have 2 slots for memory and are quite easy to get to without opening the guts of the box. A google on your particular machine will prob get you some easy instructions on doing this. Ask the guy you're buying the new chips from if it's compatible with your machine. He'll lie to you.

It sounds appealing, but I want no part of opening this thing up and physically handling the guts. You have to open up the case but its a very easy process (even you should be able to swing it). Depending on the model you can probably pull up videos on how to add memory. Just unplug it and remove the battery before you do anything. Depending on the laptop there is either an easily accessible compartment under your laptop (usually 1 screw) or you may have to remove the keyboard (which is ridiculously easy but is a poor design for novice DIY'rs). You need to know what your current memory config is, if you have an open slot, etc.

My buddy is computer guru and he says Toshibas have the least problems out of all the laptops he repairs. Some brands crash after a few years because of crappy parts and arent even worth fixing. I do believe he mentioned Lenevo as one.

Why have a Machine that can't quite do certain things and is slow at others? I dunno 80 bucks is almost 25% of the purchase price of this unit. For what I am using this for I don't think RAM will be an issue. The AMD chip will be an issue long before RAM...but that's what this price point gets. And I am getting off the topic because I am happy about this price point.

When I was the Director of IT at my company we switched to Lenovo and never had a problem. Now those were higher end units so it is possible that they may suck at the entry level price point. Time will tell. And Tom you can come over my house and I will work on your hard drive. I mean your RAM.

Ever since the Chinese bought IBM's PC business the quality has suffered. When IBM owned them ThinkPad's were the BEST laptops in the market. My work laptop is a Lenovo for the past 3 years. In that period i have had a hard disk crash (which is pretty major) and some other minor issues. So i might be biased in not liking them. I've always been "late to the party" if you will when it comes to the latest gadgets. So im really digging the fact that laptops are so damn affordable given that laptops do everything that I need them to do. I guess I'll be picking up the Ipad 5 for like $100 when the new hologram gadgets take over the market and will be absolutely stoked about my purchase lol.
