Mike Tannenbaum isn't a closer

Green Jets & Ham

Recommended Posts

I do think the Jets got used here but its as much Woodys fault as anyone elses because he pushes for these things. I think the Jets are better off by not having Aso. Too much money tied into the corner position and for what? Bottling up Davone Bess? Id even go a step further and say the Jets should not overpay for Cromartie either. Bring in a vet and give the young kid a chance next year. Bring in Ty Warren and beef up the front of the defense.

+1 Cro if the price is right. But Buchanon, Fabian Washington or Nate Clements would be fine. Heck we might be able to bring in Fabian and Clements. Both are good corners who could play up under Rex, imho.

He's gotta be embarrassed. Jets were tied to this guy, and in the lead for quite a while, only to have the rug pulled out from them. Texans got out sooner and got a younger CB who's nearly as good for $10M/yr. Jets didn't get out, they were there right up until he signed with someone else. Tanny's not used to be jilted at the alter. Hopefully it's a quality learning experience for him.

Now he has to have that CB mentality, forget he just got burned, and go make the next big play.

Yeah you are right dude. I like the idea of getting several nice pieces now. But you are right he must feel a little jilted.

To win in this league you need a closer. The Packers have a closer. The Saints have a closer. The Patriots used to have a closer. The Jets haven't had a closer since Dick Steinberg ran the show.

Dick Steinberg was a closer.

Didn't dick get burned by Reggie White after signing boomer? 33-51 as a general manager, drafted blair thomas and johnny mithcell. the only thing dick closed was our chances of winning.

Don't forget how he "closed" on Brett Favre and Mike Holmgren.

Jason you are a cap guy. So tell me this, in the precious time after the opening bell, when there are no seconds to waste, shouldn't your team be closing?

The Eagles closed.

I dont think the Jets were ever in a position to close though. I mean maybe there was a very very very brief window when Houston pulled out but I think the guy wanted to go to Philly and Philly knew it. I think everyone knows that the road to the Super Bowl is much easier in the NFC. While its an overall better division its not top heavy like the AFC where you have to go through Brady, Manning, and maybe Rivers and there are the stubborn defensive teams like the Steelers, Ravens, and of course the Jets. The NFC West stinks. The NFC North has 1 team in the Packers. The South has some decent teams and the East does too, but nobody is a heavy hitter. He figures he went to the best team in the NFC. I also think there is a certain lure to playing with Mike Vick. Even to the other athletes hes like a super celebrity.

Its not like Philly could have possibly come in with a better offer than Houston. They paid Joseph just south of 10 million a year with 23.5 guaranteed. So they had to be in the ballpark on these figures considering they knew Aso was a better player and going to command around Revis money. Philly went 36 million in the first three years with 25 guaranteed. The total contract is 5/60, but those backends never happen especially for guys in their 30s so its all funny money. Houston knew they were being played so they dropped out. The Jets had to be pretty close to that as well. They turned to Dallas to make sure it looked to everyone that there was still a bidding war going on while the team he wanted did what they could to make it work. They had to do that because if the Jets dropped out once Houston did and he refused to say yes, then Aso is screwed if the Eagles said they cant do it and have to come in at a lower price. So they used the Cowboys to keep the Jets in the game. Jets never had a chance.

you lost me when you said D. Steinberg.

Steinberg seemed like a bright guy and a nice man who died a horrible painful death. But his tenure was mostly a mess. His biggest idea was trying to sign the immortal George Perles away from Mchigan State, whom he failed to close. And George Perles, best I recall, didn't overload any shelving with Lombardis after that.

As I'm sure you will agree, it's far from egg on his face if he decided the deal was too rich for his blood. I mean, let's say they could have signed NA to a deal SLIGHTLY higher than Cro, that's a no brainer right? Even you would be on board, I'm sure. Apparently, it was too tough, so he backed out. Smart.

Exactly. I would bet the Jets came down to the wire with Aso despite offering considerably less than the eagles ended up giving him. I am sure Mr. T leveraged Rex, Revis, the Jets Super Bowl chances and Aso's own statement's about wanting to play with the Jets. If, at the end of the day, the dollar difference was too much for Aso to ignore, then Mr. T did the right thing in backing off. Nothing to be ashamed off. Now, if they have made some cap room with re-doing other contracts in anticipation of Aso's contract, and can get Braylon, maybe a pass rusher and sign Cro, it could turn out to be better than getting Aso, as exciting as that sounded.

Mr. T is grade A in my book.

I'll give him a C because he did the best he could with what he had. You have to get a win to get an A

This is exactly what i was thinking. I think we all have to agree that getting aso could've been a good thing, but if you look at what the Jets are able to do now, after having cleared all of that cap space, it appears we might actually be in much better shape now.

We have some weaknesses that need to be addressed. Once/if those weaknesses are sured up, not signing aso might have a much better impact than signing him would have.

I hope the jets do something to at least keep the talent level where it was last year. Of course, everything is contingent upon Sanchez, in terms of our success. However, I feel that we can't really give Mike T any grief until the roster is set.

This thing is not over. Cut the man some slack until our roster is set.

As far as Mike not being a closer, Darrelle Revis, Brett Favre, Ladanian Tomlinson, Jason Taylor, etc say hello. Just because you may value certain players more than Tanny, that should have zero bearing upon his credibility, in your eyes, as a closer.

I apologize, but anyone with eyes and ears should be able to tell that Tanny has indeed been a closer, and a very good one at that. If you question his ability to evaluate talent, that's one thing. Then again, two AFC championship games say otherwise.

BTW, Steinberg, really?!?

C'mon.

Not if it costs much more than you were prepared to pay and disrupts other opportunities. That is being foolish. Unless it was a desperate need, which this certainly was not. Aso is great. Cro is hardly a liability.

Ham...what the hell happened to you?

Seriously, are you bi-polar or something?

Tannenbaum has signed numerous difference makers over the past 5 years and has helped turn us into a legit Superbowl contender. But he's not a closer because he couldn't seal the deal with Nnamdi?

Are you taking crazy pills?

You may want to remove the "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" avatar. It might make some of inmates a bit restless after today.

I've been taking those pills for years. I'll say it. Tanny is a cap specialist. Not a personnel man. He has neither the charisma nor evaluation ability to be top-notch at his position. Woody wants a guy? Tanny can craft the contract--make it fit and put a bow on it. Of course he throws away loads of draft picks in the process. Favre never wanted to play here. Tanny got him for Woody, spent picks, and got shat upon when Brett ran off holding hands with another team. He paid for other big names for one or two year rentals by burning draft picks. He drafted a few good ones and a few bums--just like anyone else, but you can't give him a pass on Gholston and then say Revis was "his" choice. Bottom line, we've got three to four picks a year due to Tanny's genius. He gets players that are already solid contributors or stars. He doesn't find them. He pays for them. Which is why losing Cro (who cost us two picks including a second rounder) would've been an enormous expense for the return. Knowing this, Tanny was still trying to get Aso and pay him like a rock star.

I don't come here often, but I'll always read a GJ&H post. Call me old school. I was mildly excited to get Nnambi but the deal collapse doesn't have me too concerned for now. Not a Cromartie fan, but now I hope we sign him him. Given the recent seasons, we really cannot say Tanny is not doing his job.

Mike Tannenbaum is what hes always been hes a smart cap guy who's told who to keep, draft, and sign as a free agent by the football guys. In the current case its Rex Ryan. Hes not by any stretch a talent evaluator like a Charlie Casserly who know the game inside and out.

Good to see you Hammer

Oh, C'mon man! I was taking the unpopular position! If you take the same position then it's not as unpopular. Please alter your opinion so it does not coincide with mine. Thanks in advance, Mr. Mouth.

He started his post with, "I don't come here often..." Meaning please don't get all excited...I'm cool with you and all, but let's not assume this relationship is going any further. And there you go, all blushing and kissy-face: "Where you been? I missed you so much! Maybe we could post together, y'know, quote each other and stuff! Like old times!" I'll bet chicks had a tough time breaking up with you, Max. And now Haggis is out of here. Shaking his head like, "what was I thinkiing?" And Max is all, "I only had a few drinks and figured, y'know, I'd see what you been up to...remember that thread, that one time...we had some really good times. I've changed, you know. Things are different now. I'm not hanging around the Mod Lounge any more and I hardly even see GOB nowadays. Anyway, PM me. Maybe we can do a fake screen-name joke together...just for fune, I mean, nothing serious..."

I am not going to comment on most of this post. But I like that Smizzy doesn't allow fake screen names here. Takes away from the overall quality imo.

Shots fired?

DLJ I am not sure if we met. I would like to introduce myself, I am Ham. I know you have heard of me but it isn't all true. The gentically gifted rumors are true. The prowess when it comes to mock drafts, also guilty. Slaying the ladies with my smooth style?

Guilty.

I just wanted to say that you are a fine, fine kitty. I am in a committed relationship so I am not looking for any funny business. But meow.

Meow I said.
