A week before the Jets are on the clock with the 30th pick in the NFL draft, general manager Mike Tannenbaum touched on a variety of topics Thursday at his pre-draft press conference at the team's Florham Park facility.

The Jets have six picks this season after selecting just seven players over the previous two drafts with Rex Ryan at the helm.

"It's nice to have six picks this year for a change," said vice president of college scouting Joey Clinkscales. "We'll see how long we have six picks."

Tannenbaum left open the possibility that Gang Green could trade out of a selection if the deal is right.

"We'll listen to any opportunity to go up or back," he said. "We're not going to rule anything out. If those scenarios do play out, we'll see what happens when the phone rings on Thursday night."

Tannenbaum conceded that the absence of a free agent signing period before the draft due to the league's labor impasse may play a role in the teams' draft strategy. The Jets, of course, have plenty of free agents, including key components such as wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

"There's no magical answer," Tannenbaum said. "There's just the judgment of the best player on the board vs. what's going to happen in free agency. Even if you don't get your first or second choice in free agency or the draft, there's going to be other opportunities. If we feel like down the road we're going to have trouble getting a player back, then that may break a tie in the draft room."

Although the Jets have plenty of defensive needs, Tannenbaum admitted only that they are targeting 8-10 players in the first round and "we'll take the 30th best player ... whoever that is."

Tannenbaum and Clinkscales also said that the recent 25% pay cuts for football operations employees such as scouts and coaches haven't affected the draft preparation process.

"That was a decision that Mr. Johnson made," Tannenbaum said. "Woody's been a great owner. We sincerely like being here. ... We have great people in the building. That decision was made, but from where I sit ... everyone's happy here.
