Rex Ryan on Bill Belichick: He’s the champ, I’ll take a swing at him

When Rex Ryan coaches the Jets against Bill Belichick’s Patriots, he looks at it like a title fight in which Belichick is the defending champion.

That’s the analogy Ryan used today in discussing coaching against Belichick on Sunday.

“From a competitive standpoint, that’s like facing the world champ,” Ryan said today, in comments distributed by the Jets’ PR department. “You know the only way to beat him is you’ve got to be at your very best, then we’ll see. You want to compete against the very best. Certainly, with him, he is the best coach out there, may go down as the best coach in the history of the game, but I’m going to take my swing at him.”

If Belichick is the best coach in the history of the game, Ryan must be pretty good, too: In five meetings since Ryan became the Jets’ head coach, Ryan is 3-2 against Belichick.
