Is the NFC better than the AFC?

Before the season started, it seemed clear that the NFC was about to gain the upper hand on the AFC.

After all, the defending champion Ravens were stripped of a large chunk of their talent to free agency.  Young hotshot QB's RG3, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick all reside in the NFC, along with Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.  Not to mention Adrian Peterson.

Yet, 4 weeks into the season, the AFC holds the head to head edge and is currently 8 games over .500.  The NFC is 8 games under .500.

Andrew Luck, the seemingly forgotten rookie QB with all the Wilson/RG3 hype, has led the Colts to a 3-1 record, including a 27-7 win over the 49ers.  And though the Steelers are struggling to a surprising degree, teams like the Titans, Chiefs, Chargers, and Dolphins (last night's lost to New Orleans notwithstanding) have been positive surprises.

Meanwhile, in the NFC, the Giants, Bucs, Falcons, Packers and Redskins have combined for 3 wins.

I don't think the NFL has those 'dominant' teams as in the past.    There have been very good teams over the year, but they were never above and beyond everybody else. Hell the 18-1 Patriots were probably one of the best offenses, but it wasn't like the defense was so dominant.   And they played in a bad AFC East division.  There seems to be far more bad teams these days compared to anything else.  Look at the QB situations for many teams.   The Jags look like a team who will go 0-16.  The Raiders aren't good, the Giants stink, the Brown aren't good, the Chargers aren't very good, the Steelers look old, the Vikings have no QB and so on.

The Broncos have been dominant, but they really haven't played anybody. And we've seen this with Mannings teams for years.   They go 14-2 and lose in the playoffs when games get closer and Manning can't throw 7 TDs.  We saw that with the Pats & Packers more recently.   THose teams really depend on their star QBs having HOF games every game.  That's just not realistic and it's why Manning, Rodgers, and Brady might get close year after year, but they seem to come up short more often than not.

Who would win in a Saints vs Broncos super bowl if it happened this weekend?   Who knows.  Both teams look good, but both have weaknesses.  Time will tell.

Who would win in a Seahawks vs Broncos super bowl?    Seattle is almost unbeatable at home.  They kind of suck on the road.   Who wins in a Seahawks vs Patriots super bowl?   Brady and company have shown that they kind of choke against defenses who beat them down in the postseason.

I also don't think it's a sport where "this team is the best" matters as much anymore.  The Ravens weren't the best team last year, but they wound up winning the super bowl. The Giants sure weren't the best team when they won, but they had runs.  The Jets barely made the playoffs in 2010, shouldn't have made the playoffs, but they did, and had a nice run.    It really just takes having a strong game and confidence, because the truth is, the "any given sunday' mantra holds true.  There just aren't any great teams who can just show up and are that much better anymore.    AFC, NFC, etc doesn't matter.
