Jets Roll Over Bengals; 27-7

The heavy rain may have kept the fans away but it couldn’t stop the Jets from rolling over the Bengals in week two of the preseason.  The Jets defense looked strong but it is hard to grade them because the Bengals offense is, well, the Bengals offense.  Overall the Jets defense held Cincinnati to 202 yards on the day.  Even more impressive is that the Bengals only averaged 2.1 yards per rush and 4.9 per pass (13 completions and 31 attempts).

It is the preseason so it is hard to read too much into any of it.  What is important is that the offense improves and that was the case today.  The first team offense played the first half; minus Derek Mason, Brandon Moore and Shonn Greene.  Sanchez and Plaxico Burress had a few plays where they weren’t on the same page but they connected in a big way.  Burress had 66 yards receiving in the first half on 7 receptions and made an impressive over the shoulder touchdown grab before the half.  For a player that is coming off a two year layoff, he didn’t show much rust and that is encouraging.

Mark Sanchez was 12/20 for 187 with two touchdowns in the first half (Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress).  Greg McElroy took over and continued his impressive start and added a touchdown pass to Joe McKnight in the 4th quarter.

Biggest cause for concern?  Possibly the kicking situation as Nick Folk missed a 42 yard field goal early in the 1st Quarter and later kicked the ball out of bounds on a kickoff.  He did add a 50 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter.  His competition in camp, Nick Novak, made a 30 yard field goal and both of his extra point attempts.

Although the offense stalled a couple of times early, I walked away pretty pleased considering the conditions they were playing in. Thought Sanchez looked sharp. All the concerns of him not being an all weather QB should be gone...he's played well in some very awful conditions.
