  • NFL.com ranked him as the 99th prospect for the 2016 draft in January.
  • CBS Scouting Report notes that he is best suited for a team running man coverage.
  • USA Today gave a 3rd round grade to Burris in their draft write-up.

Pro Football Focus had this to say about Burris five months ago:

The senior from Raleigh is one of the more underrated cornerbacks in college football. He has shut down opposing receivers week in and week out. The most yards he has allowed in one game was 20 against Old Dominion in week three and has eight games of allowing under ten yards. His overall grade is +11.3 and opposing quarterbacks have an NFL style quarterback rating of 38.4 when he is targeted. Quarterbacks have started to avoid throwing to Burris’s side. Since week four, Burris is eighth in the nation in cover snaps per target at 13.8. Burris has also shown the ability to support against the run. He has an overall grade of +3.9 as a run stopper including a +2.1 grade against the number-one ranked team in the country – Clemson.

The Jets picked Burris for his physicality, as he was tied for 3rd in bench presses among the defensive back group at the combine.   His skills are suited for man coverage, and he is physical at the line of scrimmage.  There have been some chatter about him possibly moving to free safety at some point, but as of now he fits in at corner-back.  The possibility of multi-position eligibility seems to be a theme with the current regime’s defensive picks, as they seem to value players that can move around the field.
