Over the course of the next several weeks, Jets Wire will be taking a look at many of the team’s positional battles leading up to training camp. From backup spots, to starting positions, we’ll break them all down. On tap today? The safeties

ANALYSIS :

When it comes to these reserve positional battles, so much of it is going to be determined by what the Jets do at quarterback. By keeping four, New York is going to have to forgo depth at a specific position. Safety could very well be one of those spots where depth is trimmed.Right now, the Jets have two set starters — Marcus Gilchrist andCalvin Pryor. They have a cornerback, Marcus Williams, that has experience playing safety. That, in a way, gives them a third. There’s no need for anything more than four, so that leaves just one spot open.

And that spot is likely to be given to Rontez Miles.

Injuries got Miles into the lineup last year where he performed quite well. His never-ending motor was regularly on display, and he stepped up in a big way on special teams. For a roster-bubble player, that’s exactly how he can make the team. After him? There’s a chance Dion Bailey could make it for depth as a free safety. UDFA Doug Middelton looked good during OTAs and minicamp, and could force his way on the roster with a solid training camp.

At the end of the day? Look for Miles to make the team, Martin and Bailey to be cut, and Middleton added to the practice squad.
