Count on Coles in clutch

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Eric Mangini often has said to anyone who'll listen that all positions on the Jets are open. And one wide receiver has taken that message to heart.

"I've been trying to put my nose to the grind[stone] and take it day by day," this certain wideout said. "When Coach walked through the door, he said we're all starting from ground zero. Nobody has a leg up on anyone. You just hope when they're evaluating the guys that you fit into the puzzle somewhere."

Sounds like a nervous player, squarely on the NFL bubble. Doesn't sound like Laveranues Coles. But Coles it is.

"Everything is different now," the seventh-year man said this week. "You're trying to be seen and not heard, just shut up and play ball."

The trouble with this picture is that while Coles is unsteady from the departures of coach Herm Edwards, virtually his entire offensive staff and close friend Wayne Chrebet, those now on the scene have lost no faith in Coles.
