Valentin, 38, has been slowed by a disc problem in his neck and has developed an elbow problem. He was hitting .182 in only 10 games with New Orleans. Bernazard emphasized that Valentin is not retiring. But surgery has been a possibility since spring training. "He told me he's going to return," Bernazard said. "He's going to rest, see if he heals and then try to play next year. But who knows?"
