Sheets met with Rangers executives, accompanied by his agent, Casey Close. The Rangers have shown consistent interest in Sheets, whose market has developed slowly due to a late-season elbow problem. Sheets, 30, pitched 198 1/3 innings despite his missed time, finishing 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA. Over the past eight seasons, he has made 30 more starts and pitched 175 2/3 more innings than righty A.J. Burnett, who signed a five-year, $82.5 million free-agent contract with the Yankees. Sheets declined the Brewers' offer of salary arbitration and the chance for a raise from his $11 million salary on a non-guaranteed contract. The Mets are among the other clubs interested in Sheets, viewing him as a possible alternative to their top free-agent choice, lefty Oliver Perez.
