Three weeks away from opening the regular season against the Cowboys, Jets coach Rex Ryan has already promised to beat his brother, Rob, the Dallas defensive coordinator.

"I hate to do it to him again, but we're going to," Rex Ryan told Jets season-ticket holders during a recent conference call. "We've got to beat 'em."

Rob Ryan coached the Cleveland Browns defense last season. Leading up to that game, Rex wore a wig to mimic Rob's long hair and stuffed a pillow under his shirt to simulate Rob's larger belly in a press conference leading up to the game. The Jets won, 26-20, in overtime.

"It is special," Rex said of the fraternal matchups. "After the game, in particular. But going into it, it doesn't matter. The fact that it's my brother or cousin or anybody else. It makes no difference. We're paid to win. And that's what we go about doing."

The game will be played at night on Sept. 11 at New Meadowlands Stadium and broadcast on NBC.

BRUNELL TO SIT AGAIN

Backup quarterback Mark Brunell missed the preseason opener Monday night due to an injured pinkie, and he will sit out Sunday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals after pulling a calf muscle during practice Friday afternoon.

Brunell, 40, will watch rookie Greg McElroy, who was 23 of 39 in the game against the Texans, take the majority of the snaps after starter Mark Sanchez and the first unit take a seat sometime in the second quarter. Ryan added that he hopes McElroy, who took five sacks and countless hits in the Texans game, will "hopefully not get smashed."

MASON IFFY, BUT PLAX SPIFFY

Wideout Derrick Mason (knee) is questionable for the Bengals game, but Plaxico Burress, making his way back from a left ankle injury, will make his pre-season debut. He is expected to play as long as the starters are in.

Burress impressed Friday afternoon with a long reception from Mark Sanchez that would have gone for a 78-yard touchdown.

Right guard Brandon Moore (hip) will be held out by Ryan, as will defensive lineman Sione Pouha. Reserve lineman Vladimir Ducasse is expected to fill in for Moore. Tailback Shonn Greene (foot infection) will not see action either. Center Nick Mangold (neck) is expected to play after missing the opener.
